Brennan Wins Burger King Scholarship
October 16, 1997
Awards are coming the way of University of Idaho quarterback Brian Brennan, who, after being recognized as the Big West Conference's Offensive Player of the Week several weeks ago, was chosen as the Burger King College Football Scholarship winner for his performance against the University of North Texas.
Brennan was one of eight athletes honored last week by Burger King Corporation, which is donating $10,000 to the University of Idaho general scholarship fund in Brennan's name.
Student-athletes are chosen not only on the basis of accomplishments on the field but in the classroom and community as well. Brennan completed 34 of 49 passes for 396 yards and two touchdowns in the Vandals' 30-17 Big West Conference victory over UNT.
In addition, he is maintaining a 3.14 grade-point average in Marketing and has been a volunteer on visits to local elementary schools to talk to children about the importance of academics and living drug-free.
"Brian's poise and experience have been a big part of our success this season," Coach Chris Tormey said. "He was an integral part of our victory last weekend.
"We're grateful to Burger King for this award."
Brennan is having a stellar senior year in a comeback effort after three shoulder surgeries. His leads the Big West Conference in passing efficiency (147.38) and total offense (287.2 yards per game) and is ranked 21st in Division I-A in passing efficiency and 15th in total offense.
Winning the weekly award automatically qualifies Brennan as a candidate for the Burger King Vincent Draddy Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards. Four of the weekly winners will be selected as $25,000 finalists. For the winning athlete, Burger King will establish a $100,000 scholarship endowment.
