Scenes From The Fair

A few photos from the North Idaho Fair this past weekend...

This girl was spending some quality time with her pigs before they were sent off to the butcher.

I tried not to make any sudden movements around this K-9 policeman.

Next time I see my son picking his nose, I'll be glad he's not doing it like this.

"Don't take my picture!!! I have to fix my mane!"

This goat had it all figured out.

This cougar didn't like having its picture taken. I barely escaped with just a scratch!

This rooster dearly wanted to peck my eyes out. He did manage to nail the camera lens.

With all the animals, crafts, rides, and food, making simple spin art was my son's favorite activity.

Little Birdie

I don't have one of those $1000 cameras with interchangeable lenses. I just have a little Kodak EasyShare that fits nicely into my pocket, which is great for me because I've usually got a child in each hand and don't have a third hand to lug around camera equipment. My kids are used to me quickly grabbing the camera out of my pocket for a quick snapshot. Like when we spotted this hummingbird in Athol. I held out no hope of actually capturing a decent image of the little bird in mid-flight from twenty feet away, but sometimes my trusty little Kodak surprises me. If you're looking for a palm-sized camera that produces great images and is a durable workhorse, you can't go wrong with the Kodak EasyShare line of digital cameras.

Family Silver

There's silver in them hills!

This statue in Wallace is dedicated to the families of the area's silver miners.

Be careful as you approach it... There's a wasp's nest in the little boy's head.

Highway 95

Highway 95, the lifeline of North Idaho, is going to be a bumpy road for years to come, what with billions headed to Idaho for much needed improvements to our roads up and down the state.

The current hot spot for construction is north of Potlatch. If you're driving between Coeur d'Alene and Moscow any time soon, expect to stop and wait.

Giant White Pine

This Idaho State Champion Western White Pine was around 600 years old when it died in 1998. It was cut down the following year, but remains impressive.

Castle on the Green

This castle builder was practicing his craft during Art On The Green at North Idaho College. In a ten-minute span, he was asked three times about what kind of sand he was using. "Regular mason's sand, nothing added," he patiently answered each time. This castle was about eight feet tall and twenty feet around.

A Perfect Afternoon

I took this photo at the end of a perfect afternoon playing and swimming with my kids in the surprisingly warm waters of Lake Coeur d'Alene. This is why I live here.

The Coming Storm

Don't look back... A thunderstorm looms in the distance as a lifeguard watches over the swim area of Camp Sweyolakan, on Lake Coeur d'Alene.

I've been so hot the past few weeks, I'm just going to post pictures of water from now until the next cool-down.

Hayden Lake

The giraffes were out at Honeysuckle Beach on Hayden Lake last week.

This dedicated father tirelessly pushed his son up and down the beach for almost an hour. What a dad!

Moose on the Palouse

This big guy showed up on a Moscow farm this morning, hanging out in the cool shade and munching on apples and tree branches. As evening approached, he decided he'd had enough of us gawking at him and took off across the wheat fields.

A Really Tall Tree

This tree is at the top of Silver Mountain, halfway along their Nature Trail. It stands out all by itself among the rocks. I highly recommend that when you see this tree, you turn around and go back... The rest of the trail is a doozy for kids.

Kamiak Butte

Technically, Kamiak Butte State Park is in Washington. But the view from up there is all Palouse, both Idaho and Washington. It's a great little hike, with easy switchbacks and one of the best scenic rewards when you reach the top. The ridge trail loops around for several miles, but we chose to just stop and admire the view, eat a little lunch, and then head back down the way we came. At the parking lot there is a play area with brand-new equipment -- nicer than some busy city parks I've seen.

In the picture below, on the left, way off on the horizon, that tiny white dot just below the distant mountain range is the Kibbie Dome in Moscow. The larger white rectangle closer to the Butte is someone's barn. To the far right, in the distant haze, is the city of Pullman.
