On The Patio
Because some of you asked, here's a before and after of the concrete patio we had poured last month. It sure cleans up the yard, and gives us an incredible amount of leisure space outside our back door. Not to mention, my daughter now has a chalk-drawing surface beyond her imagination.

Next year, I'll build an overhang to cover the sliding door and large window on the right. We face west, and that afternoon summer sun bakes the back of the house.
I've always felt that a backyard should be a comfortable extension of the indoor part of one's home, a place where a family can hang out and relax during the temperate months. Our yard is just about there. Just a few small projects left, and then I can stop thinking about it.

That looks fantastic. My two love chalking outside.
Well ok, I quite like it too.
Can't wait to see it!
Nice job!
wow, what a difference a bit of old concrete does :)...... a porchie thing on the back of the house would be great to shelter from the sun and the rain....

Question for ya - Iâve only been following your blog a short time. What was the deciding factor for concrete? I'm looking at doing a similar project and I'm trying to decide between pavers and concrete.
Thanks- TeachingDad
Lovely!
Nice.
Hi TeachingDad,
To answer your question, we didn't want to rip out the existing concrete patio because of the cost. You can see it in the before photo. We wanted the new to blend with the old, although we briefly toyed with the idea of doing the new part in an exposed aggregate. In the end, though, I'm glad we just went with plain concrete because you can't even tell what part of it is 4 years old and what part is recent. If there had been no patio there to begin with, we might have gone with pavers or stamped concrete.
That looks great!
We had the exact same "before" setup as you, but I went with a big-ass deck instead. If we had done a concrete slab like you, it would have instantly become a skateboard platform and I never would have been able to enjoy it! ;b
Looks really good. I'll have to tackle a concrete project in a couple of years.
