Dirty Magazines

My house is filled with dirty magazines.

No, not those kinds.

I mean, Smithsonian, Time, National Geographic, Discovery For Kids, and Real Simple.

The kids grab hold of them as soon as they arrive in the mail, and the next thing I know there are dirty, ripped-up magazines on the floor, behind the couch, on the stairs.

And sometimes they actually read them.

One time I caught my son engrossed in a Time article about health-care reform. I asked him, "Do you understand what you're reading?" He answered, "Sort of."

I've long been disappointed by the magazines that are specifically geared toward kids. Highlights was good when they were younger, but for pre-teens Discovery For Kids seems to be the best of a very small bunch. I wanted some kind of printed media coming into the house, so we settled on those few that I listed above.

Years ago I gave up on newspapers. Printed on paper, anyway. I read three local papers on-line, as well as several nationals. When the news is urgent and important, I'd much rather rely upon the Internet for its delivery.

But magazines are different. The computer screen just doesn't cut it for leisurely reading articles about the ancient wonders of Alexandria or life in colonial Jamestown.

And I love how my kids soak up the words and pictures, even if some of it is a little over their heads. I don't mind at all if the magazines get a little dirty in the process.

Which magazines do you subscribe to?

Brain Child, Real Simple, Family Fun, Bon Appetit, Gourmet, Everyday Food, Everyday with Rachael Ray, My Big Backyard, Highlight's Hi-Five - we used to get National Geographic and Conde Naste Treveler, now I just swap with my mom for those because seriously, I get too many magazines!

No subsctipstions at the moment but very picky on what we buy. I buys the Women's weekly occationaly and hubby buys Science something, then we buy the National Geograph or sport magz, read the paper occationally online and only buy Saturday's paper slightly, to many lies or twisted stories in it, why do they get away with it?
Got heaps of kids books around the house, luckily all 3 are into reading.

I get Vanity Fair, Lucky, and Southern Living. What can I say? Magazines are the guilty pleasure dessert of my reading menu.

Our magazines get dirty too, but only because they usually end up on the bathroom floor too close to the toilet. I know - ewwww!

None. I read everything online unless I pick up a mag or newspaper at the library.

I like NG but it's so depressing at times I can't take it. And that's saying a lot as a former journalist.

I agree with you about kids choices. They either are boring, poorly written or talk down to kids. Nothing that really works. It's a lot of work to explain modern problems in 3rd, 5th or even 8th grade language.

I smell biz idea!

I loved Popular Science.

Our bathroom reading (this is a little embarrassing) was Reader's Digest, from which I read only the humor features.

I don't subscribe but buy as and when I find good ones. National Geographic for Kids is nice and my kids love it but they're awfully expensive once they reach our shores. I but more of the Playhouse Disney mag local version for the younger two. My eldest (same age with your son) prefers a local English magazine which is informative for her age.

I found out I had too many coming in, so I am cutting them down to Time and a gardening. Also I have Yankee that my aunt ordered again just before she passed away.
But when the kids were home they loved National Geographic and Discovery... and anything that was science. Publishers Clearing House was sad to see my kids grow up. lol

The only magazines we get these days are those "fake" ones from Real Estate agents.

National Geographic,Time, Reader's Digest, Good housekeeping, Ladies home Journal, Outdoors, and until recently got Smithsonian and a few more that I've let dropped. They were piling up faster then I could give them away.

National Geographic for Kids isn't too bad, but it simplifies a lot what an adult magazine would discuss.
