Birthday Rules

Father's Day? What Father's Day?

Today was my son's birthday, and we made the entire weekend out to be a celebration of his 11th year of life. So, there was little time for me.

But that's okay. One part of the birthday rules is that BIRTHDAYS RULE!

At least I got to participate in the festivities.

On Saturday we met up with friends for a leisurely bike ride along the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes, between Cataldo and Kingston.

We found a perfect picnic spot, where the kids could explore along the shoreline. They found all the cool things: a dead snake, an old tire, a beaver dam, and fresh mountain lion prints.

After several hours on the trail, and keeping an eye out for mountain lions, we headed back home so my son and his friends could swim at the Kroc Center the rest of the afternoon. I sat in the hot tub the entire time - an early Father's Day treat.

Today, though, was given over to a family birthday party, and celebration of dad was merely an afterthought. My son did hand over an extra large piece of chocolate cake, so he must've been thinking of me.

But really, I don't need this day to be reminded how special it is to be a father. There are 364 other days that make me feel that way.

Hey, we spent the day at a mountain lake! Seth's birthday is next week, so the two holidays are separated.

Uhh, you saw all the signs warning that all dirt within a mile radius of the trail is poisoned with deadly mining waste didn't you?

We ride that trail too, but with all the signs I decided to only ride it while wearing a biochemical suite. Then I stop at the Snake Pit (which pretends to be called a "Resort") and take a shower in the sink in the men's room.

Radioactive trail dirt?! And I thought all of these mysterious red bumps popping out on my legs were just mosquito bites!

I know this is a little late but I had to tell you the irony here. My brothers birthday is also June 21, but father's day is celebrated in Sept if you live in Aus or NZ and my sister's birthday falls on Father's Day. Plus my Dad is an avid cyclists and works for a US company called Crossroads cycling which does a cycle tour from Los Angeles to Boston once a year. So I hope your son loves every day of being an 11 yo and I hope you love everyday watching and doing with him. xx S
