The Kroc Center

We've been waiting three years for our community recreation center to be built.

Now the waiting is down to less than three weeks, and we are giddy with anticipation.

Today my kids and I received a special preview tour of the The Salvation Army Coeur d'Alene Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center, or simply "The Kroc Center." It's a stunning building, with pools, a running track, climbing wall, 400-seat theater, indoor soccer and basketball courts, and so much more.

I feel a little selfish about the Kroc Center. It's going to vastly improve the health and well-being of my family. Or at least, that's the hope.

But what's even better is that it will be a refuge for many kids and adults who have nothing much to be hopeful about in their own homes and neighborhoods.

I wish every community could have a place like this.

I took a few photos for my local readers. Excuse the poor quality. All I had was my 2MP iPhone camera. And, yes, they have a lot of cleaning up to do before the grand opening on May 9th.

Woah! Beautiful place! Our city has an aquatics center in the planning phase but now the economy has squashed our city's budget so it could be another 5 years before we see it. Glad yours made it to completion.

I wish I could get McDonald's to build my church a building like that.

I haven't heard about the water slide! Or is that just a whimsical Seus-like air conditioning duct?

I was skeptical of the value of this place, but your pictures make me want to go to there.

They will have a sliding membership rate, based on income, which goes right down to zero. So, kids from low income families will have their memberships paid for partially or in full!

That place is awesome- and about twice as big as I figured all of Idaho to be. Between this and the bike trail I'm a little jealous.

Between this and the bike trail, I have no more excuses for being out-of-shape.

Nice pictures Phil. I haven't dropped by in awhile but I will try and check in every so often. Of course you are missed, but a lot of older bloggers are missing of late. The Stickman

Looks fantastic. I hope they put water in the pools before they let anyone go down the slides though.

I drive by this every day on my way to work and back home. It's a great location and I can't wait for it to open, either.

I hope that there will be a strong spiritual component in their program, and that there are personnel who will follow up with children and families who need to know that someone cares about their physical and spiritual needs. If The Salvation Army misses this opportunity, then they are only filling a role that the Government should see as their responsibility.
