Where Have All The Flowers Gone

What is it about a bouquet of flowers that makes women so giddy? If you ask most women what they want for Valentines Day, flowers are usually at the top of their list. Being a man, I don't get it. I mean, I'd be happy with one of those heart-shaped pepperoni pizzas from Papa Murphy's.

But that's okay. I don't have to get it. All I have to know is that you can't go wrong by celebrating special occasions with a vase full of neatly arranged roses, orchids, and carnations. Flowers are a fool-proof way to say "I love you."

ProFlowers knows this, of course, and wants to help you out. The online flower shop contacted me with a generous Valentines Day offer for my readers.

I have five, yes I said FIVE, ProFlowers gift certificates to give away!

Each one is worth $70, and is good for any item in their extensive online catalog. They not only have flowers, but also plants, candy, and romantic gifts for both men and women.

All you have to do to win one of these $70 gift certificates is to leave a comment here, telling me your favorite way to celebrate Valentine's Day (keep it family-friendly).

At the end of the week, I'll pick five lucky winners at random.

UPDATE: This contest is now over. Thanks!

A nice dinner out with just the two of us. Basic, but good.

The Mrs. and I usually hang out together, watch a movie, read books in bed...nothing we wouldn't do any other day of the year. We tend to mock the commercial, man-made nature of this "holiday". That being said, the Mrs. does enjoy a nice flower arrangement. I surprise her with such goodies on random days because I don't need a calendar to tell me when to show my wife a lot of love.

I love making Valentine cards with the kids and spending time on making a special card for my husband. If the two of us get to go out to eat, it's a bonus. :) I do love getting flowers, but the best thing is being so loved.

The three of us go to dessert at the restaurant where I proposed to my wife, Desirie, on Valentine's day 2001.

Three? Yes, my step-daughter accompanies us. It's kinda why we only do dessert. Ashley is a picky eater, but she loves cheese cake, and the Chef puts cream on the plate with cherry syrup hearts. Ashley was 11 when her mom and I got engaged. Now's she's 19 and this is the one time of year she looks forward to going out in public with her "parental units".

My favorite way to spend that day is with my kids and husband. We had a newborn one year and I'll be very very pregnant this year so the kids come with the day. It's all good though, there's lots of snuggling.

I have the best VDay celebrations every year, thanks to the wife working her way through college in a florists shop.

We DON'T!

The woman still has flashbacks to the craziness at the shop, so I have been threatened with bodily harm if I buy VDay flowers or presents.

Good with me, for sure!

Dinner out -- for us, that itself is a one or twice a year special event. And I tend to get chocolates and flowers, because that is, after all, what she likes best.

Sadly, the place where I proposed is long gone. But we have red wine and gingerbread if we can find it, just like we did that fateful night.

We do something earlier or later than the actual date. Nothing about going out on one of the busiest nights of the year appeals to us.

Oh yeah, we also fill out dozens and dozens of preschool valentines cards. In return, we get the best candy from whatever comes home.

My favorite way to spend Valentine's Day is to make it a big deal with the children as our Valentines. It's important for me to show my children how you should take time every once and awhile to celebrate the ones you love. I get something small and fun for my son and daughter. We usually get the heart shaped pizzas you mentioned because in our house, it's not special until there's pizza. And usually there is a "craft" involved. I just pulled out all of the previous year's crafts and I got sooo nostalgic. For some reason, the Valentine crafts are a bigger deal to me than the Christmas crafts. Maybe because the only decorating for V Day is simply what the kids make or give. PapaJD and I have never been into the "romance" of Valentine's Day. But I can't help but feel blessed for the love we celebrate as a family on Valentine's. I think it's because of all the hearts hanging around.

Our favorite way to celebrate Valentine's Day is to entertain other couples. Our church has a Sweetheart Dinner, and we are the entertainment. We perform some sketches and songs, and help make it a special night for 20 or so couples. We always enjoy "spreading the love" that way.

My husband and I have made it a tradition to go to a card store, pick out the card we like for the other, give the cards to each other, read them, say how sweet/funny/romantic they are, then put them back on the rack. Then if we go out for dinner any time around that day, we spend the $8-$10 we saved on appetizers. The actual day we usually spend with the kids watching movies or playing games.

My father passed away two days before valentines so my traditional valentine's day is spent with my Mom. I usually buy her something special to keep and we'll go out to lunch or she'll come over for dinner. Whenever my husband gets a day off after valentine's he'll usually take me out to eat. And I like to buy each kid a small candy filled heart because that's what my Dad did for me.

Of course I want to be included, as I usually try and buy my wife flowers every couple of weeks during the entire year, not just Valentine's day. We both love flowers and in the winter months they are especially welcome. I hope you have been well and maybe sometime this spring or summer you could visit with the kids. The Stickman

Phil- We just spent a quiet evening at home cooking our favorite meal. Everyday for the past 40 years has been Valentine's Day for us. I feel I am blessed each day.

If I was lucky enough to get one of your flower gift certificates, I would share the flowers with as many residents at a Life Care Center in Coeur d' Alene. Sometimes these elderly people are forgotten and a flower can bring back a special memory or time for them. Plus, the true personal reward in giving them a flower and sitting down and talking to them is a true act of kindness.

I've been trying to come up with a really unique way to celebrate Valentine's Day this year, but so far nothing has struck me with the 'wow' factor. We just spent 5 days living in candlelight, but it was due to a freakish ice storm that robbed us of electricity and heat. So candles are definitely out this year...

My wife and I would normally make dinner together and stay in, to avoid all of the commercial-ness of the day, and the busy restaurants. We LOVE to cook together and enjoy making the food just as much as we enjoy eating it.

This year will be different, however. We've now got a 1 year old, so she'll be involved. We'll make a dinner that she can eat too and the 3 of us will sit down to dinner together and enjoy our new family's first Val Day together.

I make dinner for my wife at home. And we make hand-made cards for one another. My wife saves the cards from past years, even from when we were dating and engaged and we look at them together, remembering how much we have changed and how much we haven't changed. It provides perspective, makes us feel good.

I feel like my comment should state my best Valentine memory. A couple of years ago I was dating this wonderful girl. I was going to school full time and making minimum wage so I couldn't afford much but I was able to make her day. I invited this girl to my house. I went to Wal Mart and bought a bunch of red construction paper. I cut out little hearts from the paper with witty, sweet sayings including a bigger one saying "The Love Shack" and placed them around the front door. After entering there was a big heart saying "Welcome to Valentine's Treasure Hunt". It stated the first clue to the next cut out heart. I had her going back and forth all over the house till she reached the last clue. It was a box with a ring and a tiny heart inside asking her to marry me. She said yes. Then we followed up with a dinner I cooked for her with candlelights and a table covered with flowers, candy and a stuffed bear. We are still married and have two beautiful children. I want to be as creative and spontaneous every year to make her feel as special as I did that day.

My kids get me flowers (with help from Dad) AND they make me an awesome art project. (The kids and I make cards for Dad, too!) My parents go out for dinner, then come home and watch the kids and we go out for dinner. (Or sometimes we go out first.) We go to a wonderful Japanese restaurant.

I don't have a significant other. But, I have something better. I have a wonderful son. We always celebrate by going to Hallmark together and taking turns going into the store and buying each other cards. (I give him a five and he goes in alone).
