The Rake's Progress

How do you get a bunch of kids to rake leaves for senior citizens?
Well, you start off by telling them that it's a good deed to help someone who isn't physically able to clear the heavy, wet leaves from their lawn. Then, you explain the meaning of community to the kids, and how if we all work together then the world will be a much better place.
And last, you stuff them full of hot dogs, Rice Krispie treats, and hot cocoa, hand them rakes, and let them go crazy.
Over 100 Girl Scouts, along with their parents and siblings, spread out over my town today to rake leaves. It was a wonderful sight to see. My own son and daughter were working harder than I've ever seen them work before.
Now if I could just get them to pick up the clothes and toys scattered across the floor of their bedrooms.
Hmmm... What if I feed them hot dogs, Rice Krispie treats, and cocoa, hand them a rake, and send them up to their room? It might actually get clean!

Let me know how that works out.
I'm going to try it myself... See if I can get another Uptake post hammered out before morning.
It's all fine and dandy until they come down .
Or you can tell them they need to pick up their clothes and toys because their senior citizen dad isn't physically able to pick up the heavy stuff from the floor.
Hey, you might as well go with what works!
I've got a leaf blower last year. I wounder how that would work on the cloths.
Sounds like that was a great event. Feels good to get out and help others and a good way to show the kids how important other people are.
Now, you see, that right there is why I don't live in a city where there are trees. Or snow.
nice work. see they do pull through every now and then. i am losing the bedroom battle...very...badly.
work better :)
Thanks for the tip. I'll use it when the weatherperson forecasts a blizzard. We'll definitely need all hands on shovels then, and a little bit of sugar goes a long way with my crew!
The bedroom battle....I have decided it is not worth the fight anymore...so I don't say anything until they ask "can I go.." and my response is "I don't know can you, lets go look at your room and see?"" works marginally well. If somebody hits on the perfect plan let me know.
I happened to be riding my bike by that house while the raking was going on and thought how nice it was that someone was raking the yard for the folks who live there.
They did a great job.
ohhhh, I know that feeling!
My girls want to volunteer at the dog shelter by walking dogs, but they can't be bothered to even so much as PET our own dog, let alone walk her or feed her or brush her or anything...sigh...
If you find a trick for better bedroom-cleaning skills, I'm all ears!
