Friendly Fire

I wouldn't say my kids are pyromaniacs, but they sure like to watch stuff burn.

At least, when it comes to Grandma's big bonfire each fall. It's second only to Christmas morning, watching this huge pile of farm refuse go up in flames.

We tried roasting marshmallows, but the heat was too extreme, even with the proverbial ten-foot pole.

After the flames had died down, I inched close enough to the red-hot embers to test the macro setting on my camera. In the process, I managed to actually melt part of my favorite fleece vest.

I'm lucky I didn't spontaneously combust.

It's a nice shot, though. Well worth the effort.

Fire fire fire...I am right there with your kids. I am no pyro but it is so amazing to watch! It's my favorite part of camping.

I think it must go back to the caveman days when humans would just sit around the fire, stare into the comforting flames, and tell stories all night. Fire is both scary and protective.

Cool picture. Sorry about your vest, though. Camping clothes are always better for having a few battle scars.

If any of your kids are boys, just wait until they become scouts. I work with twelve 12-14 year old scouts. Two of them could be officially diagnosed as pyromaniacs. Each camp-out they seem to have completely forgotten what we taught them about fire from prior camp-outs. It's amazing to me how a fire will pull a kid in close and then put him in a trance. Just as long as it stays in the fire pit is all I care about.

Reminds me of my scouting days. We used to have bonfires every year and I was always fascinated by the fire at the center of the circle.

Great site. Had it bookmarked.
