Weekend Whatnot

My mom's homemade huckleberry cheesecake.

Huckleberries are here. Or at least, that's what I've heard. It wouldn't be summer in Idaho without endless searching through the forests for those elusive little purple prizes. Huckleberries make everything taste better!

Our garden is pretty much a bust. Everyone was excited about planting it, but nobody wanted to maintain it. We will get some beans out of it in another month, and two pumpkin plants look healthy. Too bad we can't eat weeds. Those grow strong and tall.

Do you RSVP birthday party invitations? I sent out six invites to my daughter's birthday four days ago, but nobody has responded. I'm going to be optimistic and plan for six kids to show up. We might have a lot of leftover pizza and punch.

I can't believe I told someone, "I'll be glad when school starts." Most parents say that because they're tired of the kids underfoot all summer long. But for me it's because during the school year my mind is almost totally focused on homeschooling. I like feeling focused. This summer I'm all over the place, thinking about and working on a dozen different projects at the same time. I may actually get them all done before September, but it sometimes leaves me feeling muddled at the end of the day.

The whole family went to see Journey to the Center of the Earth, and it gets thumbs-up from everyone. Complete mindless fun, with a simple storyline, cute special effects, and harmless scares. You don't see a film like this without a kid in the seat next to you. It's for them, but the grown-ups should have a bit of fun with it too. Just remember to turn off your brain when the lights go down.

Daddy A Go Go has finally made his first video, and it's really cute:

I've never had a huckleberry. I know Doc Holiday wanted everyone to be his, and I liked the hound. It looks like a blueberry.

That Cheesecake looks good. And your garden woes have reaffirmed why I didn't plant one this year. Thanks.

We don't see huckleberries out this way much, but it's a big year for weeds here too.

On the RSVP thing, we absolutely do it. When we had a party for Clare last fall, only about half of the kids RSVP'd. I can say though that nobody who didn't RSVP showed up.

Yes, I always RSVP b-day invites. I know how hard it is to plan a party so it's the only respectful thing to do.

Those huckleberries look freaking fantastic!

Phil,
Did you take the Cheescake picture? If so, it is one of your best ever. Mouthwateringly delicious!

Did you take the Cheescake picture?

Yup, that's really my mom's cheesecake. I've been playing around with the macro setting on my camera. Point-and-shoots can do some amazing things with close-ups. Landscapes, not so much.

The cheesecake will look that much better with your own berries on top. I hope your new spot for picking them works out, let me know as I do have some interest in that area. I may even run in to you up there some morning or afternoon. As you explore that area, you will come to realize just how many berries are up there. More than enough for everyone. The Stickman

I am currently planning a garden, complete with what I used to consider weeds (turns out many are edible and incredibly healthy for us).

I have to thank "Wildman" Steve Brill for his efforts on this.

my kids were acting unruly at the library...I know surprising, it really doens't happen often, in public anyway...a lady that was sitting by me said too bad school just got out..I told her I homeschool...she got up and walked away...maybe it was my perfume

The cheesecake looks delicious! Can you post your mom's recipe for us (or is it a family secret)?
