Are You Smarter Than A 4th Grader?

My son finished his school year last Friday.

He ended his 4th grade career with a little quiz.

Okay, so maybe it was a big quiz. A really big quiz.

I went back through all the lessons, books, worksheets, and web sites that we've covered over the past year and came up with a hundred questions that every 4th grader should know.

The subjects covered are math, science, history, geography, literature, art, social sciences, and grammar.

My goal was to test his memory. Completely. Which means no multiple choice questions. It's all fill-in-the-blank. No hints. And no review!

Two examples:

What do you call rocks that have been changed by pressure or heat?

In which two hemispheres is Australia located?

What's that? You say you'd like to take the test yourself? See if you're smarter than a 4th grader?

Here you go:

It took my son about an hour to complete, and he answered 89 questions correctly.

So, I'm very happy. He's very happy (and smart!). His knowledge and understanding of these subjects is a testament to the job we're doing with homeschooling.

If you take the test, I'll be interested in how you do. Give it to your kids, too. Have fun with it!

Here are the answers (no peeking beforehand):

I looked at some of the questions and can tell I would not do all that well. Ready to teach my kids?

72 - very humbling, much fewer if spelling counts.

If I had taken the test a year ago, my score would've been quite average. 4th grade, for me, was 30 years ago, and so much of this information has been forgotten over the decades.

Holy Freakin' Crap! I am really impressed; you guys do some good work.

Tell your son I got a lower grade than he did....and I am in medical school!

Dang, you have a smart kid. 4th grade?!? Half of that stuff wasn't taught until I was in junior high.

Cool test! Your son is very well versed for a 4th grader (or a high school kid, for that matter). I was a high school valedictorian & have a chemical engineering degree, and I got 94... though I might quibble about one or two. Is 'before' not an adverb in #49? Seems like it's modifying 'have... seen.'

You're right, but from what I've read on various grammar websites, the identification of the word "before" as an adverb doesn't seem to be clear cut.

"Never" is a stronger case, but I'll accept either word.

Actually, I wanted to see if my son would argue about it, but he just underlined "never" and moved on.
