Go Fourth!
Happy birthday to me,
Happy birthday to me...
Or is it an anniversary?
Either way, I've been blogging for four years now. My first post appeared on May 18, 2004.
It took about a year for me to find a good mix of things to write about: fatherhood, parenting, kids, and family life. I added homeschooling in 2006 when we made that leap with my son.
Writing this blog is still a fun and creative outlet for me, but best of all it's a way to connect with and seek advice from other dads. I actually spend more time reading other blogs than I do writing my own. I have to give a shout-out to just a few of the dads out there who have been entertaining and enlightening me over the years: Brett, Steve S., Jeff, Philip, Darren, Tim, Mike, Dan, Steve, Kevin, John, Whit, Mitch, Chris, William, Brian, Tim, David, Henry, and Ed. I know I missed about a dozen more dad bloggers. Thanks to all of you for your insightful, intelligent, and humorous writing. I hope I've given out as good as I've taken.
In honor of my anniversary, I have a contest! The last four years have been a real adventure, so what better way to celebrate than to give away the greatest adventure movies of all time. It's also a nice coincidence that the latest sequel opens this week.
That's right, it's The Adventures of Indiana Jones DVD Collection, featuring widescreen editions of Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Temple of Doom, and The Last Crusade. Plus, a bonus disc with special features.
All you have to do is leave a comment. If you feel like it, I'd like to know if anything I've written over the last four years was memorable enough to have stayed with you.
I'll pick a winner next week. Good luck!

Holy crap! That's a prize!
Let's see, things that come to mind:
Your insight into homeschooling has given me a lot to consider towards the education of my own kids.
The snow fort was really, really cool.
It goes without saying that any post you've written that mentions me is fantastic.
You do good work, Phil!
Happy blogiversary!
Hey, Happy Blog Anniversary, Phil! Four years...that's wonderful! Thanks for bringing us tales from the stay-at-home-homeschooling-dad frontier; I love reading you.
(P.S. Great prize! But don't enter me in the drawing--we are already the proud owner of this set.) :)
Happy Blog Anniversary! Four great years for your readers here..(I started only last 2 years I think). I won't want to be included in the contest too.. but one thing that always touch me when I read your posts is how determined you are to give the best childhood life for your kids..from a dad's side. The planned holidays, the toys, the games, the learning and the one that really amazed me is your backyard stuffs. A dad like that is so rare here in my part of the world..maybe we have them but I've not seen anybody writing about it in such a passionate way like you always did. You're an inspiration for us here. Hope to see more and learn more from you for many, many years to come.
Happy blogversary and thanks! You made me realize I missed mine yet again. (It was in April, it seems.)
What sticks with me is this: Your total devotion to making sure your kids maximize their life potential.
Has it been 4 years??!! It seems like just last year to me. Oh, that's because I have only been in this gig for a year. Happy Anniversary and thanks for the kind words.
Happy blog birthday - I'm not entering the competition though, 'cos I already have 'em. ;-)
Happy Anni-bloggy-birthday! Thanks for the very cool contest. :)
What sticks out as a memory for me here? Oh, that's an easy one... the time when I wrote this comment about Eric Herman's children's book:
"Hmmm, I thought for sure the ending was going to be a shot of him floating face down in the water filled hole. Now THAT would have been funny."
Unfortunately, Eric thought I was serious at first. Oops.
Hey, congratulations on your 4 year anniversary. That's a VERY long time in the business :-)
Happy Blogversary!
I've been reading for a year or two and enjoy the posts.
And I'd love to have that box set!
l Think Rol is the new Whit. That guy is everywhere.
Happy blogiversary. four years is pretty impressive, I'm starting to flag after two and a bit.
The main thing I've got from this blog over the last couple of years is the realisation that homeschoolers aren't a bunch of religious fanatics who want to hide different perspectives from their kids.
Oh, and a cool t shirt and some cd's too!
Keep at it Phil.
(I allready have that boxed set, so the prize can go to someone more deserving)

I just found you a couple of days ago so i don't have any favorite moments yet. But I'm loving it so far!
Congratulations!
(And like Katrina, you don't need to enter us in the contest.)
Do you have that policy that a commentor can't win twice within the last 30 days? I sure hope not... hint hint!
Since I just started reading not too long ago, I don't really have any memorable moments yet. But I think it's cool you homeschool and I like to read a dad's perspective. thanks for hanging around
I'm actually a new reader, so I probably don't deserve to win. BUT it would be cool if I did. Like you I'm a dad trying to raise my boys. I do enjoy your blog!
Congratulations on 4 years. Your blog is one of my favorites. Let's see.....I have enjoyed your perspective on schooling (we have 2 boys approaching K age), kid friendly movie reviews, and reports from family trips.
I hope you enjoy years 5-8.
What sticks with me the most are your blogs about homeschooling. Although I don't think I could bring myself to homeschool my own kids (because I'd lose my mind.. and I'm not a very good teacher..), it's great to read about your experiences. You also remind me that homeschooling can be a great thing as long as the person teaching is great at it too. I've seen too many awful children as a product of homeschooling, and I don't want my kids to turn out the same. I'm just not cut out for that role.
Anyway, enough of my ramblings.
Happy Annibirthary!!!
happy anniversary!
Damn, I'll do anything for Indiana Jones.
My favorites have always been your photos. You have a great eye for catching things that most people would overlook.
As also proven by the fact that companies "borrow" your photo for their advertising pieces.
Happy 4 years.
From one Dad to another, enjoy the ride. I drop in on your blog every so often, it's one of my favorites. Keep up the good work and happy anniversary. The Stickman
Happy Happy Birthday to your blog, so glad you are keeping it up so I can still come back again and again and read more!!
Four years already? My, how time flies. It's amazing, watching the ticker tape of your mounting archives, isn't it?
Your fabulous photos make a great addition to the site and are inspiring to wanna-be photographer dads everywhere :)
Happy Blogirthday! being a homeschool mom, I enjoy reading you talk about spending time with your kids.
I think I came in 2nd to you in some silly awards vote, which is how I originally ended up here.
BTW, I already own the DVD set. This, of course, means I'm destined to win this time :) If I do feel free to pretend it didn't happen and draw another name!
