All This Time
My son had state testing this morning. Three hours of language skills and reading comprehension.
Which means I had three hours as well. To do whatever I wanted.
My question to you non-homeschooling stay-at-home parents is... What in the world do you do with all that time?
I cleaned the kitchen, folded laundry, vacuumed, cleaned the cat litter box, and all the other daily chores that I usually perform at night.
That only took up the first hour.
After that I drove to Best Buy and browsed around, trying to think of something to get my wife for Mother's Day, but only managing to find a dozen or more things that I want someone to get for me for Father's Day.
That took up the second hour.
I was so bored out of my mind, I ended up sitting in the parking lot at the testing center playing Scrabble on my iPod for the third hour.
You moms and dads who have six hours a day, five days a week all to yourself... Man, do I feel sorry for you.

Well, as a stay at home mom, all I can say is that you are more efficient than I! More power to you!
Hey, it was just one day. Faced with that kind of time every day, I could probably think of hundreds of things to do. My basement would be done by now, that's for sure!
Yeah...being pulled out of your routine can do that to you. I think maybe my outline might be an actual book if I had that much time. :)
Must say, after 3 years home, that's why I wanted to go work, I was just so bored!! If one is organised enough your house chores is mostly up to date and dusted. I can now at least know I bring some money in for the family. Next time, just spoil your self and enjoy the quiet Phil-time!!
ahhh to have 3 alone hours would be BLISS....not complaining...just dreaming
Ooohhh you are going to get into trouble for that comment lol
(I have always wondered that too though)
What is free time?
I can soooo relate. The few times my children have not been around I've found myself wandering 'round the house thinking...."What am I supposed to be doing right now? Isn't there something I'm supposed to be doing?" Yeah, like try taking care of my children! When they are gone it leaves me completely off balance.
I thought you'd have a few more comments bashing you for asking this.
When I don't have any work to do, I sit around reading blogs or playing games and then rush to get things done in the half hour before Clare or my wife comes home.
We started doing foster care eight months ago. It chews up a lot of time.
If you have free time, you might consider foster care. :-)
Wow, I can think of about a million things I would do all day long...six hours is not that much time if you really have something you want/need to do. For starters, I would begin training for a marathon.
I am just dreaming of the day that I can get that bored, with both in school at the SAME EXACT time. And on the same campus? OMG, one school run a day, it'll be bliss!
I think you should build a boat, rocketship, or maybe even a car from scratch with all that free time.
By the way - I was at Best Buy today looking for a Mother's day gift too. I left with 2 Wii games..
I have a neighbor that doesn't have any kids and her husband does most of the cooking. She complains all the time that she doesn't have time to do anything. I just don't get it. It kinda irritates me.
You should work on a book with your beautiful photos and short stories to go with them.
You obviously don't have an infant and a pre-schooler to take care of anymore...else you'd have PLENTY to do for that three hours!
I let my mind turn to mush to rest ... cuz when my youngest is home, I'm never able to catch my breath. Really now, my morning chores take about an hour ... then five loads of laundry ... gardening ... putting out bird food in the feeders ... going to town once a week ... and watching my grandson occasionally ... a well rounded life. Who needs a job outside the home?
My first thought was....shopping for a Mother's Day Gift at Best Buy?! So typical!
Free time? Come on, how is it possible to have all of the mattresses vacuumed, glass shades from the ceiling fans washed, A/C filters changed, baseboards dusted, faucet screens cleaned, paint touched up from the daily abuse of living in a house, all other chores done, and STILL have free time? Who does all the Hallmark card shopping? Who does shopping for teacher appreciation day, etc.?
You folks are WAAAAY more organized than I am!
Just potty-training is a pretty good chunk of my day, at this point! I'm dreaming of when all three of my kids are in school ALL DAY. My list is pretty long, but maybe by then I'll be caught up enough to actually convert my lifetime worth of film negatives to digital format.
