Custer's Ghost

On our recent road trip, we made a stop at the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument in Montana. I've wanted to see the place since I was a kid.
The strangest thing happened just after we arrived at the battlefield. It was a calm, overcast day. A little chilly, but not bad for late March.
As we started walking up the hill to the actual site of Custer's Last Stand, my son asked me why General Custer didn't wait for reinforcements when he heard about the size of the Indian village. I told him, "Because Custer was vain and arrogant."
Suddenly, an icy wind started gusting wildly across the prairie. My hat blew right off my head and flew away down an embankment. I had to chase it for 50 yards. The wind never let up for the rest of our visit.
I swear, it was the ghost of George Armstrong Custer!

Either that or the ghost of infamous native american Steals Hats And Runs
Brave man dissing a dead guy at the site of his demise!
I might have pulled a Clark Griswald and said OK kids let's get in the car!
Eerie. I guess he is still a little arrogant.
Never underestimate a dead man's ego.
Funny...and a little creepy!
We were there this past summer and it was very windy then too. We were on a tight schedule and didn't stay as long as I would've liked. I definitely got a feel for how intense that battle must've been and what it must've been like to be trapped at the top of that hill, knowing that it was pretty much the end for you.
I think LIttle Bighorn is one of the coolest places in the entire country. And the native gods never, ever, ever forget. I'm sure it was they who was speaking to you.
Don't mind Custer. He's just grumpy.
Ooohh..that's already scary enough for me!
Hi haven't been here for quite some time commenting; but I do follow your stories once in a while. Nice pic there!
I'm reading a book of a priest at the moment and I'm starting to belief in ghosts already ... creepy but almost true!
Wow. All these years, and he's STILL testy about it.
Give Custer a break. After all these years, maybe he just needed a new hat! :)
As some of you know, I took a road trip about 4 years ago. Went from Cda to south Carolina and back. Northern route going, southern route coming back. Nothing on that trip trumped the Custer Battleground. It was strange, earie, instructional and awesome. When touring the site, the story, I mean the real story comes out. It turns out that the Northern Cheyenne and Lakota were promised the Wyoming territory. That promise, as many others were broken, leading the tribes to flee to the north. Our government was wrong, they were right, and Custer got what he deserved, as the official representative of our liars.
Wow, it looks like I need to plan a vacation trip here with the family. Sounds like a fascinating place!
I just whizzed past there at 85 myself. Could have been the wind that blew your hat off. I knew a guy who lived there as a kid when his dad was the ranger. There are ghosts aplenty, he says. Last time I was there it was on one of the anniversaries, a most interesting experience. 7th cav was there. Local cheyenne vets doing the color guard. All the great tangled history of the west. And at the end, after prayers and drums, the weather changed just like you said and the grass started moving like fingers were running through it. One of the locals who was part of the ceremony was walking off, stopped, cocked his head and listened to the wind, smiled and started walking again. Very cool.
