Comment Love
I get comments! Oh yes, I do. Like this one, on an old post from last May:
I don't know what to say. Do I point out the fallacies in his argument? Do I debate the myth of socialization? Do I correct his grammar and spelling?!
On a positive note, it's nice to see my relatives commenting on my blog. See you at the next reunion!
I Hate Homeschoolers said...
you homeschool parents make me sick. You believe that your kids are so much better than other kids that go to public schools. You are all doing your kids a disserves by trying to teach them yourselves. They will never have a normal teenage life. Many of you will probably say that you do not want your kids to be normal. Well, your right they won't be normal they will all be freaks that only hang out with other homeschool freaks and will never experience the real world.

That is so funny. I wonder if I can get that printed on a t-shirt. Maybe I would be doing a disserves by doing that. It's so complicated when your raising freaks that never experience the real world.
Is there a special symbol I can type for the middle finger?
So, if I send my kids to a public school I'm doing them a serves? I can't keep up with all this slang.
Just followed a trail of links to your blog...very enjoyable! Great way to handle such a comment too!
I'm getting better about letting things my family say bother me. I chalk it up to lack of knowledge.
He/She must be referring to the gigantic banner on your blog that says, "My kids are SO much better than yours."
That stick must be really uncomfortable when he/she walks - it's pretty far up there.
What lesson does, calling other kids freaks, teach?
I guess bullying is in the curriculum too.
Just...wow. I can't understand the vitriol that leads someone to post a comment like that. Could it be that they're afraid that supersmart homeschooled kids will one day take over the world and force all the "normal" people to learn proper punctuation?
Yeah, we can tell from their stellar writing that they went to public schools...
i wnt to pblic schule and eye tink i did ok dunt u?
heh...
Still, public school, private school, or home school, it takes parental involvement to make a real difference.
I can't even comment what I really want to say....just sad for that person who is judging you
Was that really a relative? Or, are you just assuming it was?
Save your breath Phil. People like that are only trying to get air time and cause a debate at your expense. The best response is to say nothing.
It is possible to have lots of fun with troll comments like that if you really want to. I rather point out what an idiot the person is so other people can laugh at them and then ignore them. Drives them nuts :D
That cracks me up! I think people who talk about homeschooling like that come across as uneducated idiots...they have not done their homework. I don't homeschool but boy I appreciate those you who do and I have debated and debated it...I think you guys are awesome!!
Despite this obviously enlightened viewpoint, I am seriously considering homeschooling my boys next year. What curriculum do you use?
If I remember right, a normal teen experience is pretty darn miserable :) Keep me apprised of happenings on the homeschool front. I'm covering education now. Happy Saturday.
And there will be more where that comment came from! It takes all kinds ;)
As kids we always sang " jealousy makes you nasty and nasty makes you fat". I know it doesn't rhyme but I think it pretty much pointed straight to your jealous commenter.
Good 'come back' Phil. You are doing a great job, I wish I had the talent and time to give it to my kids.
Go Home schoolers!!
Java (just incase I'll go anon for this time LOL)
I do my best to ignore blog trolls - which is what this guy clearly is. They post nastily-worded, personal attacks anonymously, smug in the fact that they can't be traced or otherwise held accountable for their words.
They're akin to drive-by comments, completely disinterested in cogent, intelligent discussion. Nice touch that this moron actually set up a Blogger profile to facilitate commenting.
Losers like this disappear quickly once they realize that no one cares. I guess it's lonely living in mommy's basement.
I seem to have attracted my own blog troll recently. It'll stop once the idiot realizes that burning an hour every day reading and critiquing my blog posts to an audience that hovers somewhere between zero and one is a complete waste of time.
I guess that's the dark side of the blog world. Sorry to see you receiving this kind of attention.
What ever happened to the concept of 'to each his own'? Why people feel the need to lash out against a different point of view is beyond me. Some will always take the strategy of making themselves feel better at the expense of others. Do your thing and don't worry about it.
You are cracking me up! Can't we all just get along, black and white, catholic and protestant, home schoolers and public schoolers!
Less I get hate comments regarding the above, it is a joke, lighten up. Well kinda, can we really not just get along and enjoy the differences?!
i think they're plain jealous - go on - let them homeschool at your place with your kids. they need the lessons as you can see!!! :D you go... trolls balance out karma as we say in India...

Honestly, I don't think any of that would help. Reaffirm that you're comfortable with your decision. Tell them that you hope they can give you respect for it, as you respect them even though they have been mean to you. ;)
I appreciate your good attitude. I got attacked just yesterday for homeschooling.
I'll see my attacker at the next family reunion as well.
Wow...it's sad that someone feels the need to hate so much. Love your commentary though :)
i just had a troll post a very nasty comment on my blog earlier this week. i simply deleted it without responding at all. i made a note of his IP addresses and wouldn't you know? he came back twice to the same post - to see what response he got. well, there wasn't any, so he moved on.
the haters just want attention. i'm happy to *not* give them what they want. ;^)
Just today, problogger.com posted about this subject. I think you might appreciate her insight.
