The Big Snow

Winter is officially no fun for me anymore. I stepped outside our front door the other night and suddenly found myself sprawled flat on my back, my head bouncing off the icy concrete steps.
And there I lay for five hours until somebody came looking for me. Well, that was my first thought, but then I remembered my cell phone and called inside for someone to come scrape me off the sidewalk.
Turns out I have a tough skull, and I only saved my back by somehow sticking both hands out behind me to break my fall.
This winter's snowfall has shattered all records for my town, with over 130 inches falling to the ground. It was fun at first, but now it's just a pain. We have six-foot snow berms surrounding our driveway, and I'm starting to wonder if my basement project is going to turn into an indoor swimming pool this spring when all the snow melts. We'll see how well the builders sealed our foundation. The roads around us are horribly bumpy with ice, and it's wreaking havoc on my tire alignment. The roof of my house has thousands of pounds of snow piled up on it. I listen at night for the creaks and groans of collapsing trusses.
I've taken lots of pictures of the snow, and of the kids playing in it, because it's definitely one for the memory books. I may not remember this last part of winter as being much fun, but my kids will look back on it as one of the best times of their lives. Sledding, building snow forts and snow men, digging tunnels and caves, having snowball fights with friends. They've packed enough memories into the past month to last a lifetime.

Sweet memories! I love the pictures.
Sorry to hear about your fall, but glad you're okay overall.
Snowstorms in Chicago keep coming and then dissolving before doing any real accumulation. Very strange. A like like southern Indiana/Illinois weather 20 years ago.
The tunnels are awesome.
Great pictures, Phil! I, too, am finally ready to say goodbye to all the snow (and I'm the annoying one who bounces around singing about it while most of the locals are grumbling.) I am tired of driving on the stuff and tired of shoveling it. Have you noticed how many four lane roads are down to two lanes now because of all the snow piled up in the outside lanes? It's not too bad until YOUR lane suddenly disappears with no warning in the middle of a packed commute!
Be careful on that ice!
One of the best classes I ever took was JUDO. It teaches you how to fall without breaking or spraining your wrists, elbows or back. It teaches how to get out of unwanted predicaments unscathed. Great for kids who want to snowboard, skateboard ect.. Great for girls, period. A wonderful nonviolent family activity that lets you get a little physical on a beach, snow,or in your new basement on mats. Check it out , it may just cause tons of laughter. (and a few survival skills)
snow shoveling counts for PE....I have two teenage boys that would LOVE to help with the roof load really cheap LOL Glad your noggin is ok :::knock on wood::: I have yet to fall I agree about the pics...gonna be great memories!
Hey, this is a neat trick I learned on bed rest (for 11 months to have my two children) for neck and back aches.
1 male tube sock
Fill almost full with white rice
Tie off the end
Microwave for 2-3 minutes
Put the sock underneath your neck anywhere.
The best place is no pillow on a foam mattress.
UNBELIEVABLE (lol)
Oh my, I heard the northern Idaho had 130 inches and I could hardly believe it. I'm so glad that I haven't had to travel to Eastern WA lately, the passes have been closed to often.
Be well.
It's all about perspective.
Wow! Our snowfall looks quite puny compared to yours. We are having the cold temps, but at least we don't have to tunnel into the house.
Think Spring.
You win. I'll stop complaining about the two or three feet we have.
Hey, I just remembered: Is your son still into shoveling snow?
Is this mean? We've had 81 degrees for the past 5 days in San Diego.
I'll send you the heat, you send us the water as it melts.
