Weekend Whatnot
Don't ask me how we did it, because I don't know. She must've just decided it was her time. Yes, my daughter is now sleeping through the night in her own bed! What a nice Christmas present.
I've been framing in my basement for six weeks. It goes slow when you're doing it by yourself and you only have a spare hour here and there. But it's coming along nicely. I'm not completely incompetent around lumber and power tools. So why did a friend of mine send me this message today: "Hey, how's that basement project going? I hope this wasn't you."
Movie ratings, like PG and R, are mostly meaningless these days. The only ratings that you can count on when it comes to choosing appropriate films for your kids are those created by Kids-In-Mind. I always consult this site before going to the theater or renting a DVD.
I love winter, but I don't like the fact that the inside of our car smells like a wet dog. The kids get in the car with their slushy boots and then it melts into the floor mats. I'm pretty sure there's some moldy french fries in between the seats too. The combination is nauseating.
It snowed in Baghdad, for the first time in 100 years. Is this what they mean by "when hell freezes over"?
I won a photo contest, almost. My image of an Idaho wheat field earned an honorable mention, out of nearly 3000 pictures, in the landscape/nature division of The 2007 Everyman Photo Contest. Not bad for a little point-and-shoot camera.
It's the perfect project for you and the kids to work on during these cold winter days: A Secret Hollow Book. Junglepop did it, and gives step-by-step instructions on his blog.
My son loves board games, but isn't having much luck finding other boys his age who want, or even know how, to play games like Risk, Stratego, Chess, Pictionary, and Monopoly. They all would rather play videogames.

Congratulations on the photo, I've often thought that you do wonders with a point and click.
Oh how ya gonna miss those restless nights with you daughter tossing and turning in ya bed LOL
The books sounds great, think I will make some of those with the older minded nippers.... fanks for the idea..
x
ps.... congrats on the photo.... just goes to show, ya dont need one of these new fangled sing dancing cameras.....
I LOVE the photo. That is gorgeous.
So cool on the board games. We are working on our 5 year old to appreciate board games as well. Not quite at Risk yet, but hopefully soon.
That's great on the photo and the sleeping through the night!
My 4-year-old is pretty good at Don't Spill the Beans.
Spill The Beans? Wow, I'd forgotten about that one. It's fun to see my kids playing games that were around when I was a kid, like Break The Ice, Aggravation, Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots, Life, etc...
We introduced board games to our kids before we showed them computer games. I think that if it had been the other way around, the board games would've looked kind of pathetic compared to the stunning graphics and exciting game play of the computer.
Oye, I hear ya on the car smelling part. No amount of Febreeze or air freshener gets rid of it!
Thanks for the laugh! (mark of the beast), congrats on the photo...and thanks for some excellent links! I think I might have to have me a once a month post for some nice links I find. I have a feeling I might have to link here at least once a month :-)
Clare still sneaks into our bed occassionally. I think I'll actually miss it when she stops.
We all love Monopoly too...we've got a Disney version. I agree that if you get kids playing board games early they'll probably always like them.
Congrats on the photo.
Congrats on the photo contest.
Regarding board games, we just played "Spaceopoly - The Space Age Real Estate Game." It's like Monopoly but the players buy planets and moons. It's okay, and I liked that each player gets a mission to complete in order to win, rather than play endlessly. But I thought some aspects were ridiculously over complex (e.g. laser battles).
I did the same thing, introduced board games first. My son and I play chess, his way, (he's 4) which means whenever it looks like I am going to beat him we have to start over. Hey, it's ok at least he knows how(and wants) to play. The only game I kind of regret getting is OPERATION my two year old loves it however she misses on purpose just to get a rise out of me. I need to get those industrial ear plugs out of our work shop when I play that with her. I used to be so against video games but I am becoming more tolerant some are actually helpful. (Or am I wrong and should have stuck with my gut?)
We played some of those at Christmas with part of the family home -- the eleven year old loved Risk and was looking for someone to play pictionary with him all the time too --wish we could have had your son here with him!
Love your pictures as well...
Photos: Really, you are a fantastic photog.
Board Games: Seth is learning backgammon. Except for the part about not liking to lose, he's learning them FAST. Tell your son Seth will be ready in a year or two.
My wife was just complaining that our car smelled the same way yesterday, which is odd because we don't even have a dog.
Great picture btw... congrats on the mention!
We're big board game players in our family. When the kids have a friend over, we get out a board game and play. This is usually a novel experience for the friend.
What a great post.
Congrats to your daughter, I just knew it, when she's ready she'll sleep in her own bed. Pressuring would have made it worst I think.
Your son is a super star, sleeping outside the WHOLE NIGHT!! Give him his Aussie Auntie's high five! (Note: must send him a Ozzie beanie to wear).
And his sister until midnight, Wow, good girl!
Love the photos, next time you can take a prize home too, congratulations.
