Poetry Corner

My son's assignment today was to write a poem featuring exaggeration.

LeZoom And His Room

There once was a filthy, muddy kid
His name was Lee LeZoom
He never picks up anything
In his volcanic room

Octopus creatures swing from wall to wall
They eat his moldy toys
Skeletons of cousins and friends
Dance and make scary noise

Then one night a dustmite came
It sucked him and his toys away
When they saw how clean his room was
His parents shouted "Hooray!"

There was a young lad of Phil's
Who's poetry made me feel ill
It's so good you see
I've got jealousy
At all his incredible skills.

That was terrific! Shades of Shel Silverstein--I enjoyed it very much.

A+

Very Nicely Done.

Have y'all read Ken Nesbitt? He's a Spokane children's poet, and a heck of a nice guy. Also happens to be a friend of mine. So. You know.

He's got the most popular kid's poetry site in the known universe here:

My own son, who I struggle to get to read on his own (he's ten and insists I read to him every night, and though I love it, I just don't ever see an end to it)...he picks these up and just reads them end to end. More than once.

Good stuff.
