Tree Cat

What is it about cats and Christmas trees?

Within seconds of setting up the tree in our family room, our cat Basil had firmly planted himself underneath it. And there he sits most of the day.

I don't know what he's doing. Waiting for Santa Claus? Maybe he thinks he's in the great outdoors and is just enjoying the fresh air and nature. Apparently he hasn't figured out that our tree is a fake one.

When Basil was a kitten, we would set up a real tree each Christmas and he would chew on the branches. His litterbox was always very interesting that time of year, with bits of green needles and silver tinsel mixed together in his waste.

The kids think he's cute, sitting there under the tree and stubbornly refusing to come out for anything but his own basic needs. I suspect that he believes the tree is a present for him, one big pine-scented cat toy that we've placed in the house solely for his amusement.

I've never owned a cat. Dogs love dens and dark hideyholes, but cats? I don't know.

Our cats also like to drink the water for the tree. I think they foolishly think the tree is some kind of refuge from our 16 month old :-)

At least your cat isn't destroying all of your ornaments! Strangely enough, our dog has been pulling ornaments off of our tree and eating them. Everyone says that this is weird, and that it is more typical for cats than dogs. She even climbs up on the chair adjacent to the tree to chew on the ornaments that are out of her mouth's reach. As a result, our tree is heavily weighted on top with ornaments starting at about three feet off the ground.

He sounds so cute! Did he ever try to climb up the tree?

Nice photo.

Our tree is in a big metal cage to avoid it being demolished by the kids. Despite the fact that they now can't reach it all the chocolate coins have still gone missing from it's branches.

I have my suspicions as to the culprit.

Not for many years. He broke his back leg when he was two years old (hit by a car), and has had a bit of trouble jumping and climbing since then. Plus, he and his brother are just too big to get up into those branches.

My tree is just like choosydads. Between the 2 yr old and the 2month old kitten...I can't keep the ornaments on the tree, oh well, still looks ok from the road.

This brings back memories. We had 5 cats when I was younger and they would all stake out their territory under the tree when it was put up.

You know, I've heard about this tree fetish that house cats have. Ours, when we had one, never went after the Christmas Tree.

So, I think I will have to side with the imps and say that it must be cute!

Our cat does the same thing, and drinks the water from the tree, regardless of how often I fill his water bowl. He also likes to break the ornaments. He hasn't knocked it over yet, but I have.

maybe my kids are part cat then, they seem to act like your cat around x-mas trees!
