Longer
I was saddened to hear that singer Dan Fogelberg died today.During the 70's and 80's, I mostly ignored his music because it was too "soft" for my new wave/punk-loving teenage self. Just before my marriage, I discovered Fogelberg's ballad "Longer," and found that I could finally relate to the sappy, heartfelt lyrics. I now consider the song to be one of the all-time classic love songs.
I developed an even stronger bond to "Longer" when my son was born and I would sing the song to him as we rocked. "Longer than there've been fishes in the ocean, higher than any bird ever flew, longer than there've been stars up in the heavens, I've been in love with you."
It was an easy verse to croon to my baby boy and, a few years later, my baby girl. They seemed to like it. And now, we all listen to Fogelberg's greatest hits collection, which I highly recommend. His songs are soft, smooth, slickly produced, and extremely catchy.
Listen: Dan Fogelberg - "Longer"
Dan, thanks for the soundtrack to a few precious memories. RIP.

I never listened to him when he was popular either, but have since enjoyed his music. Sorry to see him go.
I have a couple of his albums... ok, 1 cassette tape and his "Innocent Age" double album on vinyl that I have replaced with a CD. He has some GREAT stuff on the Innocent Age album, a few that made it to the charts (Run for the Roses, Leader of the Band) and some that are just as good, just not mainstream enough for top 40. Give it a listen.
I was always hoping he'd recover and start touring again.
So young!
One of our local radio stations was actually making fun of him this morning and scoffing at how "sappy" his music was. Nice. I HATE those morning zoo shows for exactly that reason.
I'm finding I wasn't the only one with the memories of Dan Fogelberg tunes.
He will be missed.
I graduated from college in the mid-90s w/ a bunch of similarly aged guys and a lot of them are taking it pretty hard.
Yeah, we drank and partied and had a good time. But on Sunday mornings, when we'd hang out, read the paper and eat some breakfast, one of my roommates would put some Fogelberg (or other artists along the same lines) . . . life just moved slower.
One of the best concerts I went to was Dan Fogelberg, he's always been a favorite for me and I was very sad to hear of his very young age, as I creep ever closer to 50.
If that makes me sappy so be it.
Man..can't believe I missed hearing this. This makes me sad too...I love to sing Leader of the Band. My husband never heard it before he met me, or Run for the Roses..my other favorite. How sad :-( He had the most beautiful voice.
