Hungry Heart

I've heard that when boys become teenagers they suddenly start eating double or triple their usual amount of food.

My son is only nine, but he already has a scarily voracious appetite. Tonight for dinner he ate two helpings of spaghetti and meatballs, green beans, a whole apple, two Fig Newton cookies, and two tall glasses of milk.

An hour later, he ate six celery sticks stuffed with peanut butter. And wanted more.

I don't know whether to make him stop or just let him eat.

He's not getting fat, thank goodness. But I do worry about the sheer amount of food moving through his system.

I worry more about how much food he's going to eat when he hits those teenage years!

I was like that and stayed thin until my post-college years. Then I had to figure out how to eat all over again.

When I was that age, I was open to trying all new foods. Too hungry to pass stuff up.

And of course, the healthier he eats, the better off he'll be through the growing phase.

My now 12 year old often eats more than me - and I'm a big guy!

It started on-again-off-again with him around age 9.

There are days I am AMAZED at how much he can put away....

Is this a recent phenomenon? If not, I am AFRAID of our grocery bill in five years. If so, it would be interesting to see how tall he is now, then measure again in a month.

Being on me 4th teenage son (still have 2 teenagers) I can tell you that you will need to re-mortgage for the food bill :) - just make sure there are loads of healthy munchie scrummies around so that its not just crisps and biscuits etc..... and in just a few years time he will shoot up and get all thin and lanky LOL.....

You can't fix what is normal! Just think about getting a part time job to bring in some big bucks for your more costly grocery bills ;)

Sounds like he is eating really healthy and nutritious meals and snacks. If only I could get my five year old to eat like that, he's so thin.

Nothing to worry about at all.

I nearly ate my mother out of house-and-home. If it wasn't nailed down, it was introduced to my digestive system.

At one point, when I was in high school, I was drinking a gallon of milk a day. And I couldn't gain weight to save my life.

As long as he's getting exercise and eating right, let him have as much as he wants!

My boys eat like that too! Seriously, I work part time to buy groceries. But it's worth it. They will eat almost anything, so it's a joy to make meals for them. And it's a chance to talk about what their bodies are doing and why they need to eat nutritious food MOST of time.
