Through The Looking-Glass

Our lives can change in an instant.

Today, at 4:07pm, my world turned upside-down, sideways, and inside-out.

I'm not sure I'll ever get used it.

I picked up my new progressive lens eyeglasses.

They say it could take up to two weeks for my eyes to train my brain to see through these new glasses. I hope I have the patience, because right now I'm dizzy and irritable. And my blood pressure is definitely higher than normal.

The kids have wisely run for cover.

I'm not a glasses guy. What are progressive lenses?

They're like bi-focals, only better (supposedly)... Imagine an hourglass shape on a lens. The top part of the hourglass is a prescription for distance. The tiny middle is for medium sight, such as TV or computer. The bottom part is for reading. The huge areas on the left and right are just fuzzy nothing. It takes a lot of getting used to, training your brain what to expect to see, especially in your peripheral vision. Also, you have to learn where to focus your eyes. Eventually, they tell me, everything will seem natural and I'll have no problems.

My grandmother used to wear those.

Not that I'm calling you old Phil, oh no, I'd never do that.

You'll get used to them. I had to get them this past spring. The thought made me sick, but the headaches from trying to read without them made me sicker. For me the worst part is the thought that something is wearing out...because I must be getting...gulp...old?!

They gave my wife a headache too. She got used to them until my daughter broke them. And the next set too.

Brett, that's what prompted me to get new glasses. My daughter sat on my old ones.

I've heard those take a bit of getting used to, but at least they're better than the old kind with the line across the middle. Maybe you should wear a "WARNING: Grumpy Daddy" sign until the danger is past. :)

You will like them in time, just remember to follow your nose when you look at something. Unlike the glasses with "lines" the vision is centered and it does work. Only problem is when you glance sideways as small stuff.
