Road Trip: Rialto Beach

The last part of our recent road trip to Western Washington was a stop at Rialto Beach, one of the most popular destinations on the Olympic Peninsula. It's a classic beach hike, with crashing waves, towering sea stacks, tide pools, and a unique rock tunnel called Hole-in-the-Wall.

There was plenty of driftwood, naturally, but this time my kids were more interested in looking for sea creatures in and around the strange rock formations. If you hike the easy 1.5 miles along the beach to Hole-in-the-Wall, plan for frequent stops as your kids discover starfish, sea urchins, anemones, crabs, and other critters in all the nooks and crannies.

Like I've said before, the Olympic Peninsula is an awesome family destination. There are so many different sights and activities to choose from. Whether you're exploring the varied beaches, walking through the rain forest, or climbing a mountain peak, parents will be thrilled by the scenery, while your kids will delight in exercising their imagination in a safe, simple, and natural setting.
It's better than Disneyland!

Ah, that sounds like a fun place. I've never been to a beach yet with a lot of things to crawl around on - only flat, sandy beaches.
Looks like a good time. Great pics :)
I'm so looking forward to getting over there with the kids one of these days.
I'll forgive your Disneyland comment since you were obviously caught up in the moment.
I never made it out there, but it looks awesome.
Whit, I wrote that last line just for you, ya know!
I think I meant "better" as in "about 1/10th the cost of a trip to Disneyland."
That is great pics and looks like fun.
Hey, your daughter got crocs on, are they as expensive over there as here?
Here they easily go for $50 - $70 a pair in adult size and every one is wearing them, great for pool deck and beach.
BTW: Did you get my e-mail?
Looks amazing.
Great photography. Last winter I posted those silent cda beach sounds photos in castMD.com blog and continue to shoot. Have you ever thought of posting to iStockPhoto. Recently I got approved to submit there. It is slightly rigorous, but fun to do. The Coast is spectacular!

Glad to see your son looked up from Harry Potter long enough to enjoy the beach! On your next road trip, you should get the audio CD and listen on the road, it's a great way for the family to experience Harry Potter together (not to mention keeping everyone entertained and tantrum-free during those long drives).
JUST amazing pictures...wow.

These pictures remind me of time on the Oregon Coast Yachats. I loved the tide pools where I would take a safety pin tied to a piece of string put a little piece of mussel on the pin and use it to catch little crabs. It was so fun and fascinating. Then I enjoyed later showing my daughters the same thing. I haven't been to the rugged northern west coast in quite a few years. Time to go back! Oh, and your comment about the Boise area was so true. I was glad get back to "God's Country" after being in the Treasure Valley for a week.
Beautiful pictures--I especially love the last one with the splash of water! Looks like a wonderful time!
