Jump Back
There seems to be a rule in my house that I had no say in, and it goes something like this: Whenever Daddy sits or lies down on the ground, all children must jump and climb on him repeatedly.
I never thought much about it until yesterday when a pain suddenly developed in my lower back. It didn't take long for a numb feeling to spread down my right leg. They call it sciatica.
I explained all of this to my kids, just before getting down on the ground to stretch my back and leg muscles. But they didn't care. The jumping/climbing rule supersedes all other considerations.
If I'm lucky, maybe they'll pop something back into place and save me a trip to a chiropractor.
Anyone have some advice for dealing with sciatica?

Ouch ouch. I can still hardly walk after hurting my back last week. Take care of that back is all I can tell you!
Just watch out, my husband's back pain turned out to be a ruptured vertabrae, you may want to consult your Dr. He had pain running down his leg and numbness in his foot.
I agree, ouch ouch ouch. Reminds me too much of pregnancy.
Sorry, no advice, but thinking of you.
Hmm, yeah... same rule in my house. Roseann is considering buying me a cup.
I hope you get your back worked out, Phil.
Best,
Eric
just do what I do. I'm also a 'friend of sciatica' thanks to my two little ones, and like you, too young for this to be normal. My only response (and it helps) is to adopt a very old demeanor and complain:
"Oh, my sciatica!"
Good luck,
Erik
This is going to sound kind of weird, but I had terrible sciatica in my first pregnancy, then none when I was pregnant with my son--so it worked for me. Do isometric exercises to strengthen your abdominal muscles.
My wife said giving birth got rid of her sciatica. I suppose that doesn't help much.
Btw, my kids don't stop until someone gets hurt or I yell.
The "free-for-all" when Dad is on the floor seems to be the rule in EVERY house where the children & father have a good relationship. I've seen it time & again.
I can totally relate on the back issue-- my husband has experienced exactly this, along with 2 herniated discs. It first started with the sciatica nerve. It became so bad that one nite at 2 am he was on all fours, couldn't sit, couldn't stand he was in so much pain. I felt so helpless-- I didn't know what to do & neither did he. He couldn't talk he was in so much pain. I called an ambulance. They ended up giving him a shot so at least his pain was tolerable until they could deterine the cause. My advice is this: even though it is a common situation, pressure on this nerve, please take the time to thoroughly check it out. I wish you luck. Let us know what happens!
Advice? Why, yes! Go see your chiropractor. (No, really)
Keri, a chiropractor's wife :)
Oh, crap. I feel for ya. I had a bout a couple of years ago and it took physiotherapy, stretching and massive doses of anti-inflammatory drugs to get it back under control. Work on strengthening your core muscles was the advice I got the prevent it from reoccurring. Seems to be working.
