Things That Mystify Me

Listen: Elvis Costello - "Really Mystified"

Blue Sloth asked his fellow bloggers to write about things that mystify us. There are so many, where to begin?

Litterbugs... What could possibly cause someone to roll down their window and throw garbage onto the side of the road. I've been driving for 27 years, and never once have I felt it necessary to dispose of my trash in this way. How hard is it to take your bottles and burger wrappers home?

Computers... I know how to use them, and I kinda know how they work. But I'll never understand the odd little bugs that crop up from time to time. For example, I run Firefox on two different computers. Same exact settings, but one computer refuses to save form information on one website, while the other computer has no problem.

Cats... I've been owned by cats most of my life, but I'll never understand them. The latest mystery with our two 10-year-old cats involves their bedtime. Since they were kittens, we've always put them in their own room at night because they have a bad habit of walking around the house howling at the top of their lungs. In our new house the cats have the entire basement to themselves at night. They like being down there, but they both have this strange habit of wanting to be put to bed. They come to me each night, crying, then running to the basement. If I don't follow, they come back and cry some more until I get up, walk downstairs, say goodnight, and close the door. Then they're happy.

Alcohol... I could never get past the absolutely horrid taste of it. Is the buzz really worth punishing your taste buds?

Keanu Reeves... How does someone with no natural acting ability have such a long and successful career? My wife and I recently watched him in The Lake House and even when Reeves was just walking around he looked like he was overacting.

Low-rider pants... I still see these guys whose pants are down below their butts, with their underwear thankfully covering things up. How can this be comfortable? What's holding those pants up? Who said this even looks good? And don't get me started on the "untied shoes" look.

Parents who leave their children... Mid-life crisis, affair, new job, mental illness... I've heard all the excuses. None of them are a good reason for walking out on your kids.

My kids' mood swings... One of the greatest mysteries of my life right now. One minute they adore me, the next minute they hate me, the next minute they're completely indifferent. Sometimes it makes me dizzy just trying to keep up.

I'm with you on a lot of that, for sure. Speaking of the littering thing, I was driving in Utah last year and this guy pulls up to the stop sign in front of me, rolls down his window and throws out all of his McDonald's trash. We then noticed him pull into his house... which was within eyesight of that corner! There were trash cans in the yard. ???????

I picked up the trash and was going to anonymously mail it to him, but never got around to it.

Walking to work today, I saw a woman throw a half-smoked, lit cig on the sidewalk. Uck.

On alcohol: Are you a supertaster? That might explain it.

Supertaster? I'll have to look that up.

All I know about alcohol is that I've tried for over 20 years to learn to like it. I've had wine, champagne, beer, vodka, whiskey, rum... That distinctive alcohol taste just makes my whole face scrunch up in a defensive posture, as if to say, "Get that foulness away from my tongue!!"

I guess I have weird taste buds.

I like your list. I agree about the littering. I don't get that one at all. And the low rider pants are a bafflement as well.

Over the top sweet sixteen birthday bashes and coming of age parties.

Reality TV shows

Our Nation's "blind eye" on illegal immigration.

People that give out your blog site to HBO ;) (thanks for the plug)

(P.S. I can only tolerate alcohol in small amounts to gargle with when I feel the beginning of a scratchy sore throat)

Great list. The low-rider pants on guys don't bother me nearly as much as the ones on girls, especially when they sit down somewhere and you can see their thong peeking out of the back. (I wish I could say I've never been guilty of this, but at least in my case it was an accident!)

Supertasters can taste things in food that other can't. "Official" supertasters, sense bitter elements in food that others think taste normally. But I'm of the believe there is more than one kind of supertaster, i.e. some can sense for freshness and odd chemicals.

Here's wikipedia's take: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supertaster Note that alcohol is generally not liked by supertasters.

My list would be pretty much like yours.
I also can't understand people happy to litter, I don't drink alcohol yik (occasionally wine), low rider pants - who designed those? Your cats sound adorable! Kids - sound like mine too!

Great list!

I despise litterbugs too.

I'm with you. I can't understand a lot of those things.
Littering I just can't comprehend at all. After moving from Chicago, where someone once told me, "the litter makes it look more urban.", to Northern Kentucky, some of the most beautiful land I've seen in America, I've realized idiots litter everywhere.
If I ever win the lottery I'm going to walk around and buy the cool hipsters belts to hold their pants up.
Nice list and contribution.
Thanks.

Didn't you begin to step onto the path as to why someone would leave their kids with the very next item in your list? It just gets bigger, that part of the list.

Why don't more people leave? What does leaving look like, anyway?
