Ohmigod! Dan Zanes!

Here's where I raise the ire of all the mommy bloggers who are in love with the guy, but I just can't help myself...

I don't get Dan Zanes. There I said it. Somebody had to.

I really don't understand what the fuss is all about. My kids and I have listened to three of his CDs, and he just did absolutely nothing for us. Sure, he's pleasant enough. His banjo seems to be in tune, if you can tell if a banjo is in tune. He's obviously quite an accomplished musician and has surrounded himself with talented people to bring his songs to life.

Maybe it's because we like our pop served up with a healthy dose of Beatlesque. Zanes' style of bluesy-folk-rock just doesn't float our boat.

Maybe it's his hair? When I was younger, I certainly admired my fair share of bands with rockstar hair. Brian May of Queen was the ultimate.

Whatever it is, somebody will have to explain the appeal and fan worship of Dan Zanes, because I'm just not getting it.

P.S. Of course, if Dan, I mean Mr. Zanes, wants to send me one of his CDs, my kids and I would be happy to give him another spin.

I don't get him either. He looks like Chris Isaak's ugly little brother.

Usually I like Banjo's too, but just not his. Maybe if he lit it on fire and sang faster he would be more interesting.

I'm starting to get an appreciation for him. I think what it was for me is that the only thing I had ever really heard from Dan was the couple of videos they played over and over on Noggin and Disney, and I wasn't all that crazy about those songs. But my wife and I listened to more on Rhapsody a while ago and I liked some of the songs. I think he has more of the Stones kind of earthy rawness and rhythmic swagger, both in his rock songs and his more folky stuff. It's not reach out and grab you kind of music (which is my preference, too), but it's good for what it is, I think.

I really like his hair, though. He's got a cool look.

My kid hates Dan Zanes. I remember him from when he was with the Del Fuegos, a cool alternative band in the 80's, so I have a lot of nostalgic affection for the guy. But my kid? begged me to TURN IT OFF. So I gave up.

I'm not familiar with any of his current music (though I remember the Del Fuegos). This mommy is more of a Jack White fan. And if my kids are going to listen to the banjo, they'll most often hear it through the "Squirrel Nut Zippers" which they adore.

There are quite a few kids' bands out there that irk me... based solely on their "look" too, so it's extra shallow. Especially the people who dress way too young for their age. I mean, like the ones who dress like little kids. I'm OK with some of the tunes of these groups but I can't stand watching any of the videos.

My son loved Dan Zanes when he was younger (I think Zanes has one of those faces that appeals to babies), but now that he's older and definitely leaning towards specific types of music he Zanes so much.

I was a big fan of the Del Fuegos, way back when. When I first saw a music video of him on Noggin, I said, "Honey, look!" She just stared at me.

Since then, I've bought a few of his CD's, which I've enjoyed.

My kids are young, though -- 1 and 4, and I don't think can appreciate Dan's music yet. The 4-year old is into Backyardigans and Doodlebops songs. You know, kid stuff. :)

I found that one of his band members, Barbara Brousal, has a CD, too, but I haven't purchased it yet.

Anyway, I think Dan is cool, and not just for the hair. His old guitars are very cool, too!
