They Start Young

My daughter started kindergarten yesterday. We were all very non-chalant about it, having been through this with my son three years ago. Plus, my daughter was more than ready to begin school. She was ecstatic to discover that three other girls that she was friends with from pre-school were going to be in her kindergarten class!

So when she got home yesterday I asked her, "Wasn't it fun to have girls you already know to play with?"

She said, "Yeah, but I played with my new friend Tyler. I like him best of all."

Hey, we girls want new challenge! And the temptation of knowing a new boy is so irresistable!

I'm hoping that by the time my youngest hits the big K, it will be old hat to me, too. As it is, my heart still skips a couple of beats when I go to pick Katie up and she isn't the first one out her classroom door. Where is she, I wonder, getting ready to bolt out of my car and conjuring up CSI type scenarios in my head for the twelve seconds it takes her to appear.

I have problems, man.

But enough about me. Congrats to your new kindergartener (and her new friends!)

New friend already on the first day of school? Wouldn't it be nice to be able to make new friends with such ease?

Glad to hear she had a good day--and new friends to boot!

I'm terrified at the thought of my son entering kindergarten. Or maybe it's the thought of both of us getting older and him not being my little boy anymore. He turns 5 in a couple weeks, so he just missed being able to start school this year. Lucky for me. I need another year.

Seth seems to be making new friends right quick in his new preschool. Sounds like your daughter is doing okay in the social front.

that's great! My kids were always nervous starting at new schools (kindergarten and sixth grade), but they ended up very quickly making new friends. It's part of the excitement of school.

Congrats on the first day of school! I am excited and terrified of that day with my little girl. Luckily I am still a few years off. We are actually thinking of switching to a Montessori school this school year (yeah, I know - a bit late in the game, but they will still take her). Anyone have an experience, good or bad, with those?
I am finding the traditional daycare/school she has been in since 3 months old is filled with gender stereotypes, boring "art" activities, and teachers teaching to the lowest level in the room (which does not include her as she is one of the older kids). Frustrating, since we try so hard to challenge and teach up at home.

Jeff- In regards to your Montessori question, I don't have first hand experience with their schools but I have two friends whose children both go to different Montessori schools and they just love it- the kids and the parents. I saw my friend's son's year-end book that had lots of pictures and described in pretty great detail what he had learned over the year, his challenges, accomplishments, friendships. He's a pretty sensitive little boy and he feels very at home in that environment. My friend's only complaint is that she felt the teachers are a bit wishy-washy when it comes to helping solve conflicts between the kids. They are a little too, "hey, man, can't we all just get along?" But I don't think they have to deal with many conflict issues, so I guess that's the upside. Hope that helped a little!
