They're Everywhere

We've been driving around a lot this spring and summer. Making pit stops in all manner of small towns in Idaho, Montana, Washington, and Oregon.

My son started noticing something... One day he said, "Daddy, McDonald's is everywhere."

Yes, I explained, they are the world's largest restaurant chain, in over 100 countries serving 50 million people a day.

"Wow, Daddy, the President of McDonald's must be more powerful than the President of the United States!"

Probably.

And then, just a few days after this conversation, a friend of mine who was visiting Shanghai, China, sent us a postcard which perfectly illustrated what my son had noticed. Amid all the jumble of neon and Chinese lettering, there in the distance...

McDonald's really is everywhere. Is that a bad thing? Personally, I've never had a bad meal at Mickey D's. We probably eat there twice a month for lunch. I'm a quarter-pounder w/fries guy, while my son loves cheeseburgers and my daughter tolerates the chicken nuggets. McDonald's has always been reliable for a quick and cheap meal. They seem to have an efficient system that earns respect and continued business worldwide.

I guess my son's right... The President of McDonald's is more powerful than the President of the United States!

It's bitter-sweet, the globalization of McD's. On the one hand, you can't go anywhere without finding a McDonald's. On the other hand, you can't go anywhere without finding a McDonald's.

At the end of a long trip abroad, sometimes it's just nice to have a cheeseburger.

Yuck. I wish they would switch entirely to organic. That would do the world a LOT of good.

Brett, I wouldn't be surprised to see them go that way. More and more people need to demand healthier foods. The fact that McDonald's has added so many salads to their menu is a good start. And my kids choose apple dippers more often than fries with their Happy Meal. If we ate there more often, I'd worry about myself. But a couple of times a month is nothing. There are a lot worse things a person could put into their body than a Big Mac.

Jared, I was thinking that same thing. Sometimes I just have a hankering for a burger. McDonald's isn't the best hamburger around, but it'll do. I find their food to be oddly comforting. Must have some connection with childhood memories... Back in the 70's, my elementary school had a McDonald's Day every Wednesday when we'd have cheeseburgers.

I believe the secret of their success here in Malaysia is being able to introduce variety of new choice with local flavour for every different time of the year. Here, apart from burgers we have fried chicken the hot and spicy style (we eat hot stuffs!) and rice porridge. There is also new burgers for every festive season like Chinese New Year, Hari Raya (the big day for Muslims) and Deepavali (light festival for Indians). And lately I found they had added in a list of nutrition contents in their food in the menu board; just to portray that their food is as healthy!

McDonalds in the south (Virginia) sucks. They overcook the meal (as a company policy), and will only serve meat that is considered medium well or well done.

AND, not liking the seasonsing salt (actually pepper) that they put on the meat, I'm constantly having to battle with them for freshly cooked meat, off the grill, not overcooked, and with no seasoning. It's like pulling teeth to get a decent meal at McDonalds around here.
