No Photoshop, no April Fool's joke. This is a real picture taken last week when the phenomenon appeared in the sky over North Idaho for about fifteen minutes.
A local newspaper photographer also took a picture of it, from a different angle, and his photo is now featured at MSNBC here.
And here's a third picture of it, taken by yet another person.
Does air pollution play any role in the bright coloring?
