Sharing Meals

Supermarkets across the country will soon begin a campaign to encourage families to share meals together at home.

Sitting down to dinner as a family can have a huge positive impact on children, resulting in decreased risk of obesity and abuse of drugs and alcohol.

My wife and I have never missed a dinner with our kids. Even during a busy spring, when soccer and school activities have us double-checking our calendars, we still don't eat dinner apart. If there came a time when kids and parents were regularly going their separate ways for the evening meal then I'd have to say that a change in the schedule was required. I don't ever want us to be so busy that we can't wind down together in the evening with some good food and conversation.

I wish we could do that. My commute guarantees missing many a lunch and dinner.

we also have made sure we all have dinner together every night, and I can count on the fingers of one hand when we haven't. We also try to have breakfast together, especially on weekend, but with teens and pre-teens who love to sleep in that's not quite as consistent.

I do think it's important to do this, and to start as soon as the kids are big enough to sit in a high chair.

All the time our 3 were growing up, suppertime was 5:00, sit down meal at the table. We all talked and shared stories. Seems fewer and fewer do that anymore.........sad....

My wife works too late to pull that of nightly. But I certainly enjoy it when it happens.

Kudos to you for never missing one.

I'd like to say that we do this but not too regularly. We try to do it every few days. However, if they are eating away from us it's usually within viewing distance. *smile*

When I was growing up, we almost never ate dinner together. As a consequence, we were not a very close family, we didn't know each other well, and didn't spend much time together.

My wife and I have made having dinner together a priority with our Okapis and it makes a big difference. Sure, I have to rush out of work at 4:55pm to catch my train to get home in time, but it is absolutely worth it! A simple thing we just don't talk about enough. Glad you mentioned it.
