Discover Music
Every time I asked my son for "Dance Around the Room with your Kids" song recommendations, he kept telling me about tunes that were decidedly not very danceable. I realized that he is discovering all kinds of music and developing a wide array of tastes beyond the happy, poppy songs of his younger years.
So, to keep up with him, no more DARK songs. Now I'll call these posts Discover Music... Listening to music is something you should all be doing with your children. The more variety the better. Pop, rock, classical, folk, reggae, movie score, big band, electronica. There's so much out there, and you'll be surprised what your kids will start asking to hear. Or as my son says, "I like that song, Daddy, let's hear it again!"
Today, discover a band from Los Angeles called The Sugarplastic. They've been making quirky and inventive music for over sixteen years, and have often been compared to XTC and Talking Heads. My son picked this song off their 1996 major label debut as one of his favorites...

That was a cool and very interesting song! I'll have to check more of them out.
I have an irregular feature on my blog that is similar to this one...I hope we don't get in trouble for posting mp3s someday!
Good Morning Phil!
I have trouble letting my kids listen to lots of music-- so far.
Though I like your idea. My kids are 8, 9 and 11.
I guess it's "Mommy fear" of what they could start liking. LOL

Phil, that's so sweet, our little one danced to it! Thx for sharing.
My preschool class found the "Macerena" song about 2 weeks ago....they love it--and they now know the dance. It's true, you never know what kind of music kids will like.
I like They Might Be Giants.
Send me your land address or PO box, and I'll send you my CompuMusik CDs, plus my compilation of legal free mp3s suitable for children on CD.
Funny songs, like one where the rock singer pretends to be a cat, and the cat muses on how boring and weird humans are.
You'll love it, Phil. May I call you Doctor? Ha.
TOADMAN: hey, dude, open up comments on your blog.
I like you and your research.
The Branch Davidians post is remarkable.
I have been a student of esoteric cultology for many decades, having seen the new trend: quarantine churches that are secret, insular cults that appear to most as just "the old Baptist church on the corner".
My boys - 2 and 3 have really enjoyed 'Here Come the ABC's' by They Might Be Giants. Looking at your frequent playlist I would venture to guess that you have a bit of their music in your collection already. It never fails, when I plug my MP3 player in and put on a few of these tracks they are zooming around the room in no time. Here is the account of the last time we did our dance: http://4walkers.wordpress.com/2006/04/23/neeeeooowwwwww/ It's been too long, when I get home tonight I'm back on this.
