Mommy Wars

It's always interesting, and kind of sad, to see the never-ending catfight between stay-at-home moms and working moms.

However, it does surprise me when yet another seemingly intelligent career woman shows such ignorant disdain toward mothers who choose to raise their children themselves rather than turn the job over to a daycare or nanny. Here in Coeur d'Alene, there is a lawyer named Rami Amaro who is running for District Judge. In a letter to supporters, she firmly placed her foot in her mouth and lost all the stay-at-home mom votes:

In fact, I know many "stay at home" moms who are less focused on their family than I am. Such moms may be at home all day and night - but they do little but watch television. Other "stay at home" moms I know may not work, but they do have other personal interests that take them away from their families just as much as if they worked. Each of these types of "stay at home" moms actually spend less time with their children than I do, and frequently spend NO quality time with their children.

Nice. I can't wait to hear what she says about stay-at-home dads.

It IS unfortunate. There is so much more things going on in the world that deserve our attention.
I know of NO stay at home moms who just sit and watch TV. I do know moms who have a very active social life that can interfere with time spent with their children. But none of us is perfect - moms at home or moms at work. We just need to stop the squabbling and help each other.

After 12 years at home with my two children, NOW i find out I was supposed to be watching TV and ignoring my children. I wish someone had told me that before I read all those books, played all those games, went to all those activities and developed wonderful relationships with my children. I feel cheated.

That's nuthin', she's a bald-faced hypocrite, claims in the same letter that a mom should stay at home with little kids, yet she has a 6 month old and is working full time. Looks like a good start in politics tho, lying from the get-go!

Yikes! I've been a stay at home mom by choice for 23 years! Let's see, 13 were spent home schooling ... you mean I should have been watching TV ... eating bon-bons ... goofing off? Maybe I should have run for office instead!

Unbelievable! It looks like the "PC Police" are out in full force here. I think this woman's comments are being twisted quite unreasonably. I don't know this woman and I am not defending her. All I think is that your vicious comments don't really reflect what she said. There is nothing in her comments that "shows such ignorant disdain toward mothers who choose to raise their children themselves ..." She didn't say choosing to be a stay at home mom is bad. All she said is that there are some women who stay at home and watch too much TV or engage in other activities. To characterize that the way you and your posters here seems to be a little unfair (of course, it is possible that you and your posters know a lot more about this woman than was presented in the comment, in which case you may be right). However, I interpret her comments to say that just being a "stay at home" parent doesn't make one a *good* parent. Just as being a working mom doesn't automatically make that person a bad mom. To twist that into an extremist view attacking stay at home moms is unfair. This kind of mindless attacking of some throw away comment by a politician is probably the main reason that thoughtful, intelligent people are scared away from going into politics. Almost anything anyone says can be taken out of context and used to vilify a person. Yikes!
