Here Comes The Ocean

I was browsing through our 6,000 digital photos and found this great memory from 2001. My son's first glimpse of the Pacific Ocean. I must've thought I could hold back a wave or something, but as I recall he did get a faceful of salt water at one point.
At least once a week, usually late at night, I will sit down at the computer and fire up Picasa, then just scroll through our photos. It becomes a zen thing as I spin the little wheel on the mouse and let the pictures flood my brain in a river of memories. Nothing else helps keep those magic moments fresh in my mind. These years with the kids go by fast. Looking at old photos reminds me not to take any of it for granted.
Enjoy the three-day weekend... Make some memories with your kids!

Digital cameras are so wonderful. They capture so many precious moments, are fast and cheap. No more buying film, waiting to have it processed, only to find out none of them turned out. Wish they would have been around when my kids were little.
Heck, Seth likes to look at his baby pictures, and he's only 3.
When I was a kid I always dreamed of having my own darkroom. Never got one. And then, one day, many years later I was sitting at the computer fiddling around with colors, cropping and contrast on one of my photos, when it suddenly me... I finally got my darkroom, and it's incredibly powerful and versatile. I don't even use the best software (PhotoShop), but the things I can do to a digital photo are just astounding.
By the way, Brett, that pic was taken at Camp Pendleton in California... Not too far from one of your favorite beaches in Laguna, I think.
I'm with Toni..I wish I'd had a dig cam when my kiddos were that little...film is nice but never as handy or as voluminous. Great pic, it's all about capturing the magic. Oceans are wonderful.
If only they had digital cameras earlier. Only problem with my obsession with mien is that I'm almost NEVER in the pictures. I have documented the kids, over the last 3 years (since birth), but seldom get any pics of me taken anymore.
I hope that one day, the kids don't look at all these pics and say "Where was dad? I never see him in any of our old photos?"

Ps. I recently asked my mom to gather all MY old phots (so I could scan them, presrve them, reminicse(wp?) - she ended up with about 20-30 pictures. Not counting the annual school photo. My son had over 50 before he was 2 hours old!
How'd you get on the base (beach) on Camp Pendleton, Phil?
I've been on the beach there, but only with my Aunt, who's the widow of a Marine, and has privileges...
I still have my chemical darkroom and color enlarger in boxes. Evertime I'm ready to get rid of it, I chicken out.
My latest excuse is that one day I'll show Seth how it works. It's kind of silly, because he'll look at me and say, "That's even stranger than those typewriter things you keep around the house."
I can't wait to do these types of things...though it won't be the ocean...something like it. I remember the first time we took her swimming...she doesn't....i do. It was something i'll never forget!
