Around The Dial
Interesting articles I've read recently:
Preschoolers should be drinking milk and water, and nothing else.
The tragic story of a child prodigy.
Are your digital photos really safe?
The latest trend in baby gifts - their own domain name.
New germ-killing spray is safe for kids.
One family leaves the rage behind.

4 Comments:
*Drink: Forget the milk. Too many hormones and such.
*Prodigy: I read a little, but it's too depressing.
*Photos: THANKS for the plug!
*Domain: I've thought about getting my kids domain names, but I didn't know it was a trend.
*Safe: No thoughts on germ spray.
*Let's move: I've been trying to get my wife to move to New Zealand for a year now. Not because politics but for clean air! (Problem is all those family members here in the states.)
Interesting articles. I haven't read all of them yet, but I will with time :)
Re: the digital pics: that article was enought to strike terror into the hearts of all dads with digital cameras. Cdr and Dvdr media will last much longer than the 2 years that the article states. I've got cdrs from 5 years ago, and dvdr from 3 that work just fine.
Another storage suggestion that was overlooked can cost very little, but offer relieble backup. You can get very large capacity harddrives for under $100. An external case (usb) runs about $25-50. Nothing wrong with backing up yoru photos on a new hard drive every 2 years or so. I'd rather do that than worry about fading negatives from 35 mm. Printing the pics otu is a decent idea (you can always scan them and order new prints at a later date), but that's rather costly and you still have to handle the original prints with kid gloves (not MY kids gloves!).
Im suprised if there aren't companies that will offer to backup you photos" , like hosting yoru site, with a secure server and all that. Get enough people scared that they will lose their precious photos, and there might be some money in that business.

Oh yeah - about the domain names. Back in 2002, I bought LoganFrye.com, and thought I was one of the few that did that kind of thing. Had his own website, baby pic, updates..all that. But when Lance came along, I realzed that it was going to be double the cost to secure each of their domain names each year, and opted for a "family" domain instead. (Truth be told that just expired, and I haven't renewed. Between the kids, aikido, and blogging, I never had time to update a website.)
