Happy Halloween!

With visions of candy corn dancing in his head, my son had a hard time getting to sleep tonight. He gets excited about all the big holidays, but Halloween is definitely his favorite (that's him above in 2001). This weekend we decked out the house with cobwebs, spiders, bones, skulls, and a sound-activated dancing ghost. Today we carved pumpkins and decided on costumes. Then, my son and I took off down the road to the historic mining town of Wallace, Idaho, to experience the Doom of Muldoon at the Sierra Silver Mine.
I love haunted houses, but there's nothing quite like a haunted mine. A dark, dank, claustrophobic place, made even creepier by ghostly decor and actors playing the roles of doomed miners. There were a couple of times when I jumped back and hit my head on the low ceiling (thank goodness for the safety helmets). My son loved it, and the sidetrip afterward to the local cemetery.
Monday we'll be at his school to watch the parade of costumes. That's always fun, until you see the same Scream Mask thirty-seven times. After school we'll probably head to the mall to make the rounds of the stores, and then back home to trick-or-treat in the neighborhood. Yes, we let our kids go door-to-door, with us watching them. And there's nothing wrong with parents accompanying their young kids on Halloween night, no matter what some child-less reporter might say.
I hope you all have a safe and spooky Halloween!

But you didn't tell us the most important part...
What are they gonna be for Halloween?
That reporter is an ass.
I can't imagine NOT going with my kids. Nothing to do with their safety, we're a fairly tight knit community. I just want a chance to relive a little of the fun. The fact that some folks give me a "mercy" chocolate bar ain't so bad either. Then, of course, there was also the neighbor last year that set up the keg in his front yard just for us dads and moms. Lucky for me he had my two favorite kinds of beer... cold and free.... and all in one keg.
We carved pumpkins last night. Seth would hold the knife with me put refused to touch the goop! He's very fastidious about some things. He's going out as a doctor tonight because he doesn't like scary stuff yet.
Btw, I e-mailed this note to that reporter:
Sorry, Marc, but I just donât agree with you on this. I live in a relatively safe suburb in Los Angeles, but there is no way Iâd let my kids go out without a chaperone, even when theyâre a bit older. Forget child abductions and scary neighbors. The real threat are cars and trucks. Excited children are prone to jumping out into the streets and drivers in a rush to get home for work are far too likely to hit a child.
Thanks for not disappointing me this morning. I knew I could get my fix of kids in costumes here. Be looking forward tonight or tomorow for what they wore tonight.
We only get about 6 to 11 and most of them are preteen or older. Average about 3 little guys. So miss seeing all the cute outfits. And I definitely agree on the parents being there with the kids. I was with mine. I might have waited in the car about 100 feet away, so they could enjoy the freedom part... but always under my watchful eye. And 12 was the cut off age for my kids. after that it was private parties at friends houses. And that was in the 1970's
Hey Parents, what time do kis start trick or treating? I don't get off work until 6, is 6 too early? We don't have a very big neighborhood yet and I don't want to miss the kids that come to my house.
hey Phil? I wanna come live as your house and be your kid for a few days, okay? I'd pay...
