Why Blog?

I received a nasty little note from an anonymous commenter who is obviously not a fan of stay-at-home dads. He chided me for lazing about all day playing with my kids and not having to do any work. If it wasn't so incredibly ignorant, I might have been upset.

But I had to laugh when he called my blog self-serving. Well, duh. What personal blog isn't self-serving? It's the very nature of the thing.

It got me to thinking about why I maintain this blog. There are dozens of reasons, but the top three are:

  1. It's a creative outlet for me. A place to stave off early senility.
  2. It puts me in touch with similar-minded moms and dads, who never fail to give good advice and thoughtful comments.
  3. There's a chance, a very very slight chance, that I might actually earn some money off this thing.

So, in a nutshell, that's why I blog. Why do you blog?

lazing about all day??? This person clearly has never taken care of children in his (I'm assuming it's a guy) life! Oyyy!!

I blog for my kids, as kind of the journal I never got around to keeping when I was a SAHD and when they were little, and as a journal now. They're the main audience (or them in the future anyway). Though it's great to hook up with other dads and moms (and others) too.

If it's self serving why was he bothering to read it and comment?

I blog for my own entertainment too...and as a journal for my daughter. Connections with other bloggers are a bonus too.

I guess I stole Chip's answers.

Maintaining a blog? That's self-serving. Making snarky comments on a blog, though? Why, that's a sacrifice for the betterment of man!

As for why I blog...I'm trying to quit my day job. Only another $200/day in AdSense revenue and I am so there.

I hope you are copying your blog as well, either by cd or paper. Your kids will love this 30 or 40 years from now. All the wonderful thoughts you have had, and what your views are and the pictures of where they had been, and most of all, Phil... how much you love them.. how important they are in your life, and the fact you did give up a job to stay home and make sure they were raised right. So do make a copy of your blog.
I am starting to do one on the ones I like the most. And will put in in a folder like, with a title, Grandma's thoughts. I have a granddaughter who reads mine daily. And she thought that would be a terrific thing for her daughter.
Why do I blog? 90% of mine is funny to me thoughts, and if I can get others to laugh with me, then my mission is done. Some of mine are serious. But I like my ones with humor the best. I tell my friends that it fills the frustrated journalistic part of me. lol... So Phil, you keep blogging.

One of the great things about blogs is you realize how many whacked people are out there. But even better, you meet a lot of great people out there you had no idea even existed.

I got to luagh at your reseasons Phil and say "ditto" I blog for the very same reasons. Expression, advice, and maybe earn some money, but it also helps me like right now when I get off work at midnight from Wally World and can't get to sleep. Eventually my eyes do get heavy. Keep up the good work. I'm finding some people will never be happy with anything because they haven't learned to first be happy with themselves.

I blog for a variety of reasons. It gets addictive actually. It provides discourse not otherwise available to me, some of it actually profound and intelligent. It allows me to whine and vent. Most of all it lets me get my thoughts in order for the day and gets my dog and myself exercised :)

Ah yes, I laze about all day long with my offspring as well. It's not as though they need me to take care of them or anything (goodness, they're 1 and 3 for heaven's sake, they can take care of themselves!!)I like to blog when I'm not stuffing my face with bon-bons and having my feet massaged by the neighbor's pool boy...
I blog for many of the same reasons you mentioned. You know I used to do some scrapbooking and while I still think it's really neat it is such a time commitment and I've got sooo many things I need and would rather be doing. The blog really does allow me to put my thoughts/photos together in a medium that is compatible with a hectic schedule. That, and my husband has finally stopped calling me "Scrappy" or "Scraptastic". It was getting kind of annoying.

Phil - congrats on the San Diego honor.

As to why I blog? I'm sort of an opinionated cuss, so it helps when I run across interesting, thought provoking, or maybe just wacky stories I can link to them, add a few lines, and share a little bit of my thought process.

There's another reason - I'm terrible about sharing pics of the kids with my family, and this is a pretty quick and easy way to do that, and send out the posts automatically to my family spread all over the country.

The real challenge is to keep at it with lots of competing demands on my time. But it's been about six months of semi-regular posts now, more than a year since the blog was started, so I'm feeling good about that.

Keep up the great work, Phil.

I blog because I am.

My wife has been after me to keep a journal for years, and I have half a dozen of them, each with a few pages soiled with ink, scattered in drawers and closets and under sofa's, but I'm never able to continue them. Since I do most of my work on a computer, the blog is a readily accessible format in which to jot something down.
Sorry to hear you were slammed by an ignoramus. As a full-time stay-at-home-dad from 1991 until 2003 and still the primary caregiver for my two teenage children, I've come to accept that most people can't understand why, or how a man can do this type of work. That is their problem and I pity them that. For me, I was at my father's side when he died and he shared with me that the only regret he had in his life was working too much and not spending enough time with his children. That will not be my regret. And as a bonus, I have a great relationship with my daughter,my son and my wife.
