Itsy Bitsy Spider
An hour ago it was panic time in our house... It was not unlike that scene from Annie Hall when Alvy goes to Annie's apartment to smash a spider "the size of a buick."
What we found scurrying across the living room floor was an Aggressive House Spider, also known as the Hobo Spider. I figured this out after about thirty minutes of intensive Internet research. You can guess what I'll be dreaming about tonight.
My wife is very worried now, but I keep trying to tell her how rare these bites are. We just need to take steps to prevent the spiders from entering our house and to clean, vacuum, and dust those areas where the Hobo Spider might be likely to take up residence.
This is how our house gets really clean... We either have guests coming over, or my wife sees a spider!

We live next to Angeles National Forest. Researchers ask us to send in any spider we find in our yards because two-thirds have never been categorized. I've never sent any in, but we have seen all kinds of weird ones out here. I always found that a bit creepy.
Good thing my wife doensn't read this blog! After surfing over to the Hob spider web page, the webs on the inside corners of our house look awful suspisious! Desirie would insist on moving if she even though they "might" be Hobo spider webs!
Yeah, my wife has nightmares about them as well and we've had a few in the house.
You can pick up spider traps relatively cheap. Also, we put seven around the house, which has limited the number of those critters we've found inside. And it's safe for dogs.
But they are not fun to have to deal with if, for no other reason, the ever-present fear of being bitten.
I think these bites must be very rare. We used to live in an older house and we had those spiders everywhere, I don't think anyone in my family was ever bitten. We even found a black widow once and my mom kept it in a jar as a pet and named it Charolette.
I will never live in an old house again. Yuck.
I killed a black widow today while cleaning out the garage.
