The Deer Hunter

There's a little place an hour north of us called Beyond Hope, where friendly white-tailed deer roam freely. We only spent an hour driving around the game preserve, but it sure made an impression on my kids. They're already asking when we're going back to pet the deer. I'm also successfully brainwashing my son to believe that the best way to hunt animals is with a camera.

i agree - the best way to hunt animals is with a camera.
Brave comments for people who live in northern Idaho. Ha!
When I was 12 I took hunter's education classes so I could go out and get a hunting license. Unfortunately, my father ruptured disks in his lower back, and three surgeries later his spine was fused with bolts, bone and titanium rods. He has not hunted since then, and I was never able to experience a hunt with my dad.
While I really don't want to hunt all the time, it would have been great to share this northern Idaho tradition with my father, who learned to hunt from his father, and again - my grandfather learned to hunt from his father. I won't get that. But my older brother just might be taking me on my first hunting trip this fall. I'm definitely excited.
... I'm also a very big fan of cameras!
Once upon a time I lived in Hope. The deer were always a big hit with visiting guests!
They go through cycles though. Because they can't be hunted sometimes there are too many deer and not enough food and they start to look sickly. How are they doing this year?
