They Just Don't Understand

I rarely listen to the radio these days. I learn about new music from friends, MP3 blogs, and magazine articles. My "radio station" is my iTunes library, randomly shuffling through over 18,000 songs.

My wife, however, stubbornly continues to scan through music radio in the car thinking she's going to hear something decent. And sometimes she actually does. She rushed in today to tell me about this great new song she heard. I looked it up on Google and found this fascinating, and emotional, story behind Sawyer Brown's new single, "They Don't Understand."

I haven't heard the song yet, but I do like the lyrics... Here's a part of them:

A mother riding on a city bus
Kids are yelling kicking up a fuss
Everybody’s staring
Not knowing what she's going through
Somebody said don't you even care
And do you let them do that everywhere
She slowly turned around, looked up and stared.

She said, "Please forgive them
They've been up all night
Their father struggled
But he finally lost his fight
He went to heaven
In the middle of the night
So please forgive my children
They don’t understand."

Everybody's busy with their own situation
Everybody's lost in their own little world
Bottled up, hurried up, trying to make a dream come true
They don't understand
Everybody's livin' like there ain't no tomorrow
Maybe we should stop and take a little time
Cause you never really know what your neighbor’s going through
They don't understand.

I hope I hear that one soon. As a country fan I like Sawyer Brown. Especially when they do an emotional one.

Phil - you do know I was kidding about the dress and culottes thing, right? Hope I didn't piss you off - blogs are a tough medium for humor sometimes!

I heard that song as well, Its amazing but it seams like every couple of years that band has a song that is as genuine and inspiraitional as I've ever heard on country radio (Walk, Dirt Road, 800 Pound Jesus, etc)

Thanks for the heads up on the story, I looked it up on the Internet and wow! Not a canned cookie cutter song to drive record sales! A real deal, thanks!

We saw the video on CMT and heard the song for the first time. How wonderful to have a song that so eloquently explains how little we listen or care, or try to understand.....And Yes, Jesus, Thank you for your sacrifice....now I understand.

I heard this song for the first time the other night on my way back from seeing Tim McGraw. It had me in tears!!!! The song ends with Jesus on the cross, which makes it even better...I hope you get the chance to hear it for yourself!

I heard this song a few days ago
and since I, alone, found my 30
year old daughter, Kanda, drowned
in her bath tub April 13th 2004
due to a seizure, this song meant so
very much to me as I have felt as
though I have lived on another planet for almost 2 years now. I had never given much thought to what others may be going through until I had to face the loss of
one of my most precious gifts. I can't wait to buy this CD but I have been unable to
find it. Everyone should listen to
the words in this song and take a moment to think. Thank you for
sharing such a compassiate song with the world and most of all sharing it with me. From a mother
whose heart is broken into a million pieces.
