PG-13 For Next Star Wars?

"Revenge of the Sith" is going to be so dark and violent that it may get a PG-13 rating, according to director George Lucas. How am I going to explain this to my 6-year-old son? He's been talking about this movie for months. There are Star Wars images plastered all over products in the stores, so it's not like I could keep the film's release a secret from him!

I am taking my 6 year old to it. It is Star Wars and it is not gratuitous violence.

Not gratuitous violence?

You better go read this:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/film/4513837.stm

The movie is a "bloodbath" according to advanced screeners.

Saving Private Ryan wasn't "gratuitous violence" - would you take your 6-year old to that.

It's your mentality that is going to have theaters full of traumatized youngsters.

When people complained about Jar Jar, Lucas said "oh, these are kids' movies." Now he comes out and says "Oh, I'm all about the story" to justify this new one.

Yeah, George Lucas is "about the story." WHen the devil ice skates to work maybe. He has never been "about the story."

Now all he's done is set-up parents to have to deal with either disappinting the kids who make him rich buying his toys and star wars bedsheets, or take them and deal with the nightmares..

Hi - I found you through a link on a google search about the PG 13 for Episode III. I have a 5, almost 6 year old that lives and breathes anything Star Wars. We even have my husband's old Star Wars toys (well loved) that he plays with. He has been talking about Revenge of the Sith FOREVER now. Here's what we are doing about his viewing of the movie.

We are not a theater family - our movies are usually seen at home. So, convincing him that we don't need to go to the theater is not that big of a deal.

Also, with school letting out this Friday, peer pressure will be VERY short-lived. By Saturday, he'll completely forget that he *could* see it in the theeater (which we don't frequent...see above).

We will purchase the movie when it becomes available in stores. My husband and I will preview it and edit it ourselves for him to see. I have spent hours online reading reviews and spoilers...there is no reason a 5 year old needs to see children being killed, so that will be something we skip over. There will be other scenes as well.

We can't NOT let him see it at all...the boy has been breathing Star Wars for over 2 years now. But, we can control how much of the original Episode III he will get to see.

Thanks for a wonderful and thoughtful post!

By the way, I noticed on your links of blogs we actually visit a couple of the same blogs - Busy Mom (one of my faves), Zero Boss and Daddy Types!
